recently in the Karimpuzha Wildlife Sanctuary has added significantly to the biodiversity records of Kerala\u2019s youngest protected area.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Karimpuzha Wildlife Sanctuary<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is located in the Malappuram District of <\/span><b>Kerala<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is located on the <\/span><b>western slopes of the Nilgiris.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The name \u2018Karimpuzha\u2019 is derived from the <\/span><b>Karimpuzha River,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a <\/span><b>tributary of <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the river <\/span><b>Chaliyar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The forest areas of Karimpuzha WLS form<\/span><b> part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve (NBR).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It forms <\/span><b>part of the Nilambur Elephant Reserve (Nilambur ER), one of the four ERs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> notified in the country.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It shares a <\/span><b>boundary with Mukurthi NP (Tamil Nadu)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the eastern side and <\/span><b>Silent Valley NP (Kerala)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the southern side.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>sharp topographical gradient of the hills, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ranging from <\/span><b>40 m to 2550 m,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the primary reason for the unique biodiversity of the sanctuary.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> nomadic tribes, the Cholanaikans, Cave men of Kerala<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are living inside the Karimpuzha WLS.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They form a small group of tribes with a total population of <\/span><b>217 individuals.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are classified as a <\/span><b>Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Government of India.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Vegetation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It is unique in Kerala for encompassing<\/span><b> all seven forest types found in<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>state<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including <\/span><b>evergreen rainforest, semi-evergreen forest,<\/b> <b>moist deciduous<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> forest, <\/span><b>subtropical savannah,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> subtropical hill forest, montane wet temperate forest, and <\/span><b>montane wet grasslands.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Flora<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It supports rich flora, including <\/span><b>teak, rosewood, bamboo, medicinal plants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>endemic orchids<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Fauna<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It harbors a wide variety of fauna, including endangered species like the <\/span><b>Nilgiri Tahr, lion-tailed macaque,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> elephants, tigers, leopards, sloth bears, gaur (Indian bison), and diverse birdlife with over 150 species recorded.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its pristine forests also shelter
