{"id":31621,"date":"2026-07-31T12:07:21","date_gmt":"2026-07-31T06:37:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=31621"},"modified":"2026-07-31T13:22:12","modified_gmt":"2026-07-31T07:52:12","slug":"arctic-council","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/arctic-council\/","title":{"rendered":"Arctic Council"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Arctic Council Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the Parliamentary committee on External Affairs has recommended that India should appoint a Polar Ambassador and urged the government to seek \u201cfull-fledged membership\u201d of the Arctic council.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Arctic Council<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was established by the <\/span><b>Ottawa Declaration in 1996.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an intergovernmental forum for addressing <\/span><b>issues related to the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/arctic-region\/\" target=\"_blank\">Arctic Region<\/a>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>is not a treaty-based international organization<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but rather an international forum that operates on the basis of consensus, echoing the peaceful and cooperative nature of the Arctic Region.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Member Countries:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, the Russian Federation, and the United States<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has <\/span><b>six Permanent Participants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (PP) groups <\/span><b>representing the indigenous people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Arctic.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Observer States: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Observer status in the Arctic Council is open to <\/span><b>non-arctic states<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>inter-governmental and inter-parliamentary organizations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, global and regional and <\/span><b>non-governmental organizations.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>India is currently one of the 13 observer countries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (France, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, U.K., India, China, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Italy and Switzerland)\u00a0 of the Arctic Council.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>observer countries do not have decision making powers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
