


{"id":3222,"date":"2023-02-17T04:10:26","date_gmt":"2023-02-16T22:40:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=3222"},"modified":"2025-03-26T11:04:42","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T05:34:42","slug":"governing-organ-transplantation-in-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/governing-organ-transplantation-in-india\/","title":{"rendered":"Governing Organ Transplantation in India"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Organ Transplantation in India:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>primary legislation <\/strong>governing organ transplantation in India is the <strong>Transplantation of Human Organs Act, passed in 1994.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It <strong>provides a system to regulate the removal, storage, and transplantation of human organs for therapeutic purposes<\/strong> and for the <strong>prevention of commercial dealings<\/strong> in human organs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>National Organ transplant programme:<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>implemented by the Directorate General of Health Services<\/strong>, Government of India.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Objectives:<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>To <strong>organize a system of organ and Tissue procurement &amp; distribution<\/strong> for transplantation.<\/li>\n<li>To <strong>promote deceased organ and Tissue donation<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>To <strong>train the required manpower<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>To <strong>protect <\/strong>vulnerable poor <strong>from organ trafficking.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>To <strong>monitor organ and tissue transplant services<\/strong> and bring about policy and programme corrections\/ changes whenever needed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO):<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>National level organization<\/strong> set up <strong>under the Directorate General of Health Services<\/strong>, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.<\/li>\n<li>It functions as the <strong>apex center for coordinating all activities<\/strong> and networking for the <strong>procurement and distribution of organs and tissues<\/strong> and <strong>maintaining the registry of organs and tissue donation and transplantation<\/strong> in the country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Organ donation in India:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Organ donation <strong>means giving part of the body (organ<\/strong>) <strong>to a person with end-stage organ disease <\/strong>who needs a transplant.<\/li>\n<li>In India, <strong>organ donations are legal under the Transplantation of Human Organs Act (THOA), 1994<\/strong>, which also <strong>legalizes the concept of \u2018brain death<\/strong>\u2019, the permanent cessation of all brain functions.<\/li>\n<li>Organ donation <strong>is a voluntary process<\/strong> wherein you can <strong>fill up a consent form to donate your organs<\/strong> in the event of your demise.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Types of organ donation:<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Living Donor Organ Donation:<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>A person during his life <strong>can donate one kidney, a portion of the pancreas, and a part of the liver.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Living Donor is any person not less than 18 years of age<\/strong> who <strong>voluntarily authorizes the removal of any of his organ<\/strong> and\/or tissue, during their lifetime, as per prevalent medical practices <strong>for therapeutic purposes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>donor can be a family member, relative, friend, neighbour, or in-law.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Deceased Donor Organ Donation:<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>A <strong>person can donate multiple organs and tissues after (brain-stem\/cardiac) death.<\/strong> Their organ continues to live in another person\u2019s body.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Deceased Donor is anyone, regardless of age<\/strong>, who can become an organ and tissue donor <strong>after their death (Brainstem\/Cardiac).<\/strong> <strong>Consent of a near relative<\/strong> or a person in lawful possession of the dead body is required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Eligibility criteria:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>There is <strong>no age limit for organ donation<\/strong>.
