These enormous structures are <strong>called solar prominences.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Prominences are anchored to the Sun&#8217;s surface in the photosphere, and <strong>extend outwards into the Sun&#8217;s hot outer atmosphere<\/strong>, called the <strong>corona<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They are <strong>much cooler and denser<\/strong> than the surrounding plasma in the Sun&#8217;s corona.<\/li>\n<li>Prominences are <strong>shaped by the Sun&#8217;s complex magnetic field<\/strong>, often <strong>forming loops<\/strong> with each end anchored to the Sun&#8217;s surface.<\/li>\n<li>Prominences <strong>are enormous, extending out for many thousands of kilometers.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They can <strong>last for several days or up to several months.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Some prominences erupt and break apart<\/strong>, giving rise to <strong>coronal mass ejections (CMEs).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>What are Solar Filaments?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sometimes prominences are observed against the bright background of the Sun itsel<\/strong>f, instead of at the edge of the Sun&#8217;s disk.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>These prominences appear dark<\/strong> compared to the bright background of the Sun <strong>and are called solar filaments.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>What are Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs)?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>CMEs are <strong>large expulsions of plasma and magnetic field from the Sun\u2019s corona that propagates outward into interplanetary space.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The blast of a CME <strong>carries about a billion tons of material out<\/strong> from the Sun <strong>at very high speeds<\/strong> of hundreds of kilometers per second.<\/li>\n<li>They can <strong>cause geomagnetic storms on Earth<\/strong> that can have significant impact on both ground- and space-based technological systems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0 What are geomagnetic storms?<\/h3>\n<p>A geomagnetic storm is a major disturbance of Earth&#8217;s magnetosphere that occurs when there is a very efficient exchange of energy from the solar wind into the space environment surrounding Earth.
