


{"id":3246,"date":"2024-09-27T05:48:42","date_gmt":"2024-09-27T00:18:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=3246"},"modified":"2025-03-26T11:13:59","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T05:43:59","slug":"what-is-eastern-river-canal-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-eastern-river-canal-project\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Eastern River Canal Project?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About East Rajasthan Canal Project (ERCP):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an ambitious <strong>project of Rajasthan State <\/strong>to harvest the excess water present in the rivers, especially in southern Rajasthan, and use that water for drinking and irrigation purposes in south-eastern Rajasthan, where there is scarcity.<\/li>\n<li>It envisages <strong>intra-basin transfer of water within the Chambal Basin<\/strong> by <strong>utilising surplus monsoon <\/strong>water available <strong>in Kalisindh, Parvati, Mej, and Chakan sub-basins<\/strong> and <strong>diverting it into<\/strong> water deficit sub-basins of <strong>Banas, Gambhiri, Banganga, and Parbati<\/strong> to <strong>provide drinking and industrial water<\/strong> to 13 districts of eastern Rajasthan.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The project also envisages<strong> irrigation<\/strong> in about 2.82 lakh hectare area.<\/li>\n<li>The project will also <strong>supply water to the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor<\/strong> and take care of the flood and drought situation in the area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Key Facts about Chambal River:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>tributary of the Yamuna<\/strong> River in central India and thus forms part of the greater Gangetic drainage system.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Course:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Origin<\/strong>: It originates at the <strong>Singar Chouri peak<\/strong> on the northern slopes of the <strong>Vindhya mountains.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The river flows north-northeast through <strong>Madhya Pradesh<\/strong>, running for a time through <strong>Rajasthan<\/strong>, then <strong>forms the boundary <\/strong>between Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh before turning southeast to <strong>join the Yamuna in Uttar Pradesh<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>On its south, east, and west, the basin is <strong>bounded by the Vindhyan mountain rangesand<\/strong> on the northwest by the <strong>Aravallis<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Hadauti plateauin Rajasthan<\/strong> occurs in the upper catchment of the Chambal River to the southeast of the Mewar Plains.<\/li>\n<li>It is one of the most <strong>pollution-free rivers<\/strong> in India.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tributaries: Banas, Kali Sindh, Sipra, Parbati,<\/strong> etc.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Major Dams <\/strong>on the River: <strong>Gandhi Sagar Dam, Rana Pratap Sagar Dam, Jawahar Sagar Dam.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>National Chambal Sanctuary<\/strong> is situated along the river Chambal on the tri-junction of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: Which are the main tributaries of the Yamuna River?<\/h3>\n<p>It has four main tributaries in the Himalayan region: Rishi Ganga, Hanuman Ganga, Tons and Giri. In the plains, the main tributaries are Hindon, Chambal, Sind, Betwa and Ken.
