


{"id":32654,"date":"2023-02-21T07:35:29","date_gmt":"2023-02-21T02:05:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=32654"},"modified":"2025-04-19T14:50:06","modified_gmt":"2025-04-19T09:20:06","slug":"national-curriculum-framework-for-foundational-skills-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/national-curriculum-framework-for-foundational-skills-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"National Curriculum Framework for Foundational Skills 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>What\u2019s in today\u2019s article?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Why in News?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>What Exactly is the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) for Foundational Skills 2022?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>News Summary Regarding Learning and Teaching Material for Foundational Stage of Schooling<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Why is this Initiative Important?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u00a0Why in News?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The National Curriculum Framework for Foundational Skills 2022<\/strong> to meet a key focus area of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, to improve foundational skills of students.<\/li>\n<li>With this in mind, the Minister for Education recently released learning and teaching material called the \u201c<strong>jaadui pitara<\/strong>\u201d or magical box for foundational stage of schooling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What Exactly is the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) for Foundational Skills 2022?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Background:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>As early childhood care and education (ECCE) lays the groundwork for life-long learning and development, the new<strong> 5+3+3+4 curricular structure<\/strong> that integrates ECCE for all children aged 3 to 8, was included in the <strong>NEP 2020.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>With the foundational stage (3-8 years) of education as the <strong>first stage<\/strong> in the 5+3+3+4 Curricular, pre-primary school children (classes I-II) have entered the formal schooling system in India for the<strong> first time.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In order to lay the framework, the government unveiled the <strong>first NCF for the foundational stage<\/strong> in accordance with the NEP-2020.<\/li>\n<li>The NCF 2022 is based on the recommendations of the <strong>National Steering Committee <\/strong>(chaired by K Kasturirangan), constituted by the Ministry of Education in 2021 for the development of NCF.<\/li>\n<li>The NCF for the foundational stage will be followed by its editions for higher classes, as well as teacher and adult education, in the future.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>The NCF for foundational skills 2022:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The new framework includes the <strong>&#8216;panchakosha&#8217; <\/strong>concept for education of children aged 3 to 8, with five components &#8211;<\/li>\n<li>Physical development (sharirik vikas),<\/li>\n<li>Development of life energy (pranik vikas),<\/li>\n<li>Emotional and mental development (manasik vikas),<\/li>\n<li>Intellectual development (bauddhik vikas), and<\/li>\n<li>Spiritual development (chaitsik vikas).<\/li>\n<li>It provides for the holistic overall transformation of the curriculum of the ECCE that will enable <strong>positive transformation of the school education <\/strong>system of India, including pedagogy.<\/li>\n<li>It uses <strong>\u2018play\u2019 <\/strong>at the core of the approaches to curriculum organisation, as children learn best through play.<\/li>\n<li>Hence, NCF will enable the achievement of <u>Foundational Literacy and Numeracy<\/u> for all children.<\/li>\n<li>The NCF will deal with the <strong>role of teachers as well as parents and communities<\/strong> to achieve developmental outcomes that are sought during this stage.<\/li>\n<li>In particular, the NCF do not just refer to changes in curricular content and pedagogy, but also <strong>include school environment and culture <\/strong>that will enhance the overall learning process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>News Summary Regarding Learning and Teaching Material for Foundational Stage of Schooling<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The material will pave the way for implementation of the NCF for Foundational Skills 2022 (released in October last year) for students in <strong>balvatika <\/strong>(pre-primary) and classes 1 and 2.<\/li>\n<li>The Framework describes that children <strong>between three and six years<\/strong> learn best through doing activities such as talking, listening, using toys, drawing, singing, dancing, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Therefore, the teaching material now readied by the NCERT requires teacher engagement to not only be \u201ctextbook-free\u201d, but<strong> based on toys, puppets, playbooks and story cards.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Specifically for literacy<\/strong> it lays an emphasis on oral language development, word recognition, reading, and writing and for <strong>numeracy <\/strong>it will need to focus on oral math, teaching of skills, math games, and practicing skills.<\/li>\n<li>It will also <strong>leverage technology and provide QR codes<\/strong> to enable teachers to access teaching resources such as poems, story books and flashcards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why is this Initiative Important?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>According to the <strong>Annual School Education Report 2022<\/strong> released by NGO Pratham, basic literacy and numeracy levels dropped further post COVID-19.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>For example,<\/strong> Class 3 students who were able to carry out math subtractions dropped from 28.3% in 2018 to 25.9% in 2022.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>The NEP 2020 recognises<\/strong> that over 5 crore students in elementary school are unable to read and comprehend basic text and carry out basic mathematical addition and subtraction.\n<ul>\n<li>Therefore, it acknowledges that improving foundational skills is an indispensable prerequisite and needs to become an <strong>urgent national mission<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>In this backdrop, <strong>the recently released<\/strong> learning and teaching material for the foundational stage of schooling <strong>is a nobel beginning.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1) What are the components of the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) for Foundational Skills 2022?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The new framework includes the &#8216;panchakosha&#8217;
