under its leadership to protect big cats and assured support over five years with guaranteed funding of USD100 million (over <strong>Rs 800 crore<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Government of India has proposed to set up the International Big Cat Alliance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aim<\/strong> \u2013 work towards the protection and conservation of the <strong>seven major big cats<\/strong> \u2014 tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard, puma, jaguar and cheetah.<\/li>\n<li>Membership to the alliance will be open to 97 <strong>\u201crange\u201d countries<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>These are the countries which contain the natural habitat of these big cats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>According to a proposed timeline, the alliance is expected to be launched next month in India.<\/li>\n<li>According to sources in the Environment Ministry, the alliance was \u201c<i><strong>inspired by the arrival of cheetahs<\/strong><\/i>\u201d last year from Namibia.<\/li>\n<li>IBCA\u2019s major activities will include \u201cadvocacy, partnership, knowledge e-portal, capacity building, eco-tourism, partnerships between expert groups and finance tapping\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Composition of International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The IBCA\u2019s governance structure will comprise \u2013\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>General Assembly consisting of all member countries,<\/li>\n<li>A council of at least seven but not more than 15 member countries elected by the General Assembly for a term of 5 years, and<\/li>\n<li>A Secretariat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Upon the recommendation of the Council, the General Assembly will appoint the IBCA Secretary General for a specific term.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Is India Home to All Seven Big Cats?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>As mentioned earlier, there are 7 major big cats \u2013\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Puma, Jaguar and Cheetah<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>India is home to 5 of these big cats<\/strong> \u2013 Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard and Cheetah<\/li>\n<li><strong>Royal Bengal Tiger \u2013<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>As per the latest Tiger Census conducted in 2018-19, tiger population in India has increased to <strong>2967<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>India now accounts for about <i><strong>70% of the world\u2019s tiger population<\/strong><\/i>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Asiatic Lion \u2013<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Gir National Park<\/strong> in Gujarat is the last abode for the surviving population of the Asiatic Lions in the world.<\/li>\n<li>Since the late 1960s, population of Asiatic Lions has increased from less than 200 to <strong>674<\/strong> (Census 2020).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Leopard \u2013<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is estimated that <strong>12,000-14,000<\/strong> leopards occur in India, and the population is the most genetically diverse\/outbred out of all the subspecies in Asia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Snow Leopard \u2013<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Snow leopard is native to the mountain ranges of Central and South Asia.<\/li>\n<li>In India, their geographical range encompasses a large part of the <strong>western Himalayas<\/strong> including the territories of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh in the <strong>eastern Himalayas<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In 2021, <strong>there are about 7,500 snow leopards left in the world, out of which 500 are in India<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cheetah \u2013<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Cheetah had become extinct in India since 1952.<\/li>\n<li>In September 2022, Cheetahs have been reintroduced in the wild in India as 8 Cheetahs were imported from
