Hence, <strong>a potential clean alternative<\/strong> to fossil fuels.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Green hydrogen <\/strong>is the name given to <u>hydrogen gas that has been produced using renewable energy<\/u>, such as wind or solar power, which create no GHG emissions.<\/li>\n<li>Globally, most of the hydrogen produced today is used in the<strong> refining and industrial sectors<\/strong> &#8211; to make ammonia for the fertiliser industry, in the steel industry.<\/li>\n<li><strong>In a fuel cell<\/strong> (device that converts the energy of a chemical into electricity), <strong>hydrogen gas reacts with oxygen to produce electricity<\/strong> and water vapour.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>By the end of the decade, the International Energy Agency (IEA) anticipates that hydrogen will find a host of new applications, including <strong>powering grids and fuelling the transportation sectors.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>\n<p>\n<strong>Where does India stand in the green hydrogen race?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/3twxBFhcmueSBEiQwEm97OXWmYGRhAQthRLSh7xwIDs6cnB12A4G5yEJ_5fibJNdk87jwUV06TsS02GF2OZnIID8rGvEGD4znyFmCQs0WcWptHm4aHTY6qOSkPV0nbiZWaGbxgouN-3oAeXSRiLNlw\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Image Caption: India\u2019s standing in global Green Hydrogen race<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>News Summary with respect to the National Green Hydrogen Mission<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What is NGHM?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>NGHM is a key component<\/strong> in India\u2019s attempt at energy transition from fossil fuels to renewables, with India announcing its <strong>new nationally determined contributions<\/strong> (NDCs) after COP 26 in Glasgow.\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li><strong>India had committed<\/strong> to reduce emissions intensity of GDP by 45% by 2030 (from its 2005 level) and achieve about 50% cumulative electric power installed capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources by 2030.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>The initial outlay of Rs 19,744 crore includes<\/strong>\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>Rs 17,490 crore for the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) programme,\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Rs 1,466 crore for pilot projects,\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Rs 400 crore for research and development, and\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Rs 388 crore towards other mission components.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Under the SIGHT programme<\/strong>, two distinct financial incentive mechanisms &#8211; targeting domestic manufacturing of electrolysers and production of green hydrogen, will be provided.<\/li>\n<li>A public-private partnership framework for R&amp;D (Strategic Hydrogen Innovation Partnership &#8211; <strong>SHIP<\/strong>) will be facilitated under the mission.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What are the potential benefits of NGHM?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>With NGHM, the government envisages the production capacity of low-cost green hydrogen to touch at least<strong> 5 MMT<\/strong> (million metric tonne) per annum by 2030, aiming to make India a <strong>global production-hub<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The target of NGHM is to bring in <strong>an investment of Rs 8 lakh crore by 2030<\/strong>, and create <strong>over 6 lakh jobs, <\/strong>while reducing nearly 50 MMT per annum of CO2 by 2030.<\/li>\n<li>It also expects a cumulative <strong>reduction in fossil fuel imports<\/strong> of over Rs 1 lakh crore;<strong> create export opportunities<\/strong>; decarbonise industrial, mobility and energy sectors; develop indigenous manufacturing capabilities and cutting-edge technologies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>\n<strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Green hydrogen is an <strong>expensive technology<\/strong> and the viability of this technology can be improved through government support for pilot projects and strategic interventions (especially on electrolysers) will improve feasibility of such projects.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Q1) What is a hydrogen fuel cell and how does it work?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hydrogen fuel cells produce electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen atoms.
