


{"id":33041,"date":"2023-01-06T04:48:13","date_gmt":"2023-01-05T23:18:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=33041"},"modified":"2025-04-19T18:11:01","modified_gmt":"2025-04-19T12:41:01","slug":"election-announcement-in-myanmar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/election-announcement-in-myanmar\/","title":{"rendered":"Election Announcement in Myanmar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>What\u2019s in today\u2019s article?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Why in news?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>About Myanmar Coup<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>What is the current situation in Myanmar?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>What has been the role of international communities to bring normalcy in Myanmar?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Should India reconsider ties with the junta?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why in news?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Recently, Myanmar\u2019s military ruler, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, declared that his regime would hold free and fair elections.\n<ul>\n<li>He did not say when, but it is believed that elections will be conducted this year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The General made the remarks as the junta observed the 75th anniversary of Myanmar\u2019s freedom from British rule.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>About Myanmar Coup<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>In February 2021, <u>Myanmar&#8217;s military seized the power after detaining Aung San Suu Kyi and other democratically elected leaders<\/u>.<\/li>\n<li>Army seized control following a general election in which Ms Suu Kyi&#8217;s NLD party won by a landslide.\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>Aung San Suu Kyi\u2019s National League for Democracy (NLD) party secured a landslide victory, taking more than 80 percent of the vote.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is the current situation in Myanmar?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Status of political prisoners<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Recently, NLD leader Aung San Suu Kyi was convicted on five more charges of alleged corruption and given seven years in prison, taking her total jail term to 33 years.\n<ul>\n<li>Aung San Suu Kyi is considered as an icon of the country\u2019s pro-democracy movement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Including her, the junta has jailed more than 15,000 political opponents and pro-democracy activists over the last two years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Spring revolution continues<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Myanmar has remained in violent turmoil since the military takeover as battles rage between pro-democracy forces and the military.\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>Days after the coup, many new parliamentarians organised themselves into the National Unity Government (NUG) and <u>launched what they called a \u201cspring revolution\u201d<\/u>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What has been the role of international communities to bring normalcy in Myanmar?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Steps taken by Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In August 2022, ASEAN banned Myanmar&#8217;s generals from meetings until the organization&#8217;s supposed peace plan makes progress.\n<ul>\n<li>Earlier, in April 2021, ASEAN released a five-point framework on Myanmar crisis.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>First-ever resolution adopted by the UN Security Council on Myanmar<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In December 2022, the first-ever resolution was adopted by the UN Security Council on Myanmar.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The resolution called for an end to violence and for the release of all political prisoners, including Suu Kyi.<\/li>\n<li>India, along with Russia and China, had abstained from voting on the resolution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>India\u2019s role<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>India is walking on a diplomatic tightrope on Myanmar since the military coup of February 2021.This strategy is tied to two things:\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>the importance of Myanmar for India; and\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>New Delhi\u2019s desire to preserve its channels of communication with the Burmese generals and prevent them from moving further into China\u2019s lap.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>India believes that the solution to the crisis in Myanmar needs to come from the region.<\/li>\n<li>So far, India has abstained from voting on any resolution against Myanmar in the United Nation.<\/li>\n<li>During his visit last November, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra made no mention of democracy or prisoners, and did not meet any political leaders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Should India reconsider ties with the junta?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Myawaddy job scam<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>In this scam, scores of Tamil youth were lured to Myanmar\u2019s Kayin after being promised jobs in Thailand, and were put to work in digital scamming centres.<\/li>\n<li>Controlled by an ethnic militia, Myawaddy is a no-go area for the junta, making the rescue effort more complicated for Delhi.<\/li>\n<li>This casts doubts on the junta\u2019s ability to deliver on any of India\u2019s concerns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>North-east insurgent groups are fighting for Junta in Myanmar<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>There are reports that militias backed by the junta to fight the Pro-Democratic Forces (PDFs) are manned by north-east insurgent groups such as the Manipuri People\u2019s Liberation Army.<\/li>\n<li>Local PDFs now control much of the area where India is building a trilateral highway and the Kaladan Multimodal transport project.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Flow of refugees<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>A flow of refugees has made Myanmar\u2019s turmoil a concern for India in a more proximate sense.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>According to unofficial estimates, nearly 50,000 people are now taking refuge in the four Indian states, mainly in Mizoram (40,000), but also in Manipur (3,000), Arunachal (150) and Nagaland (250).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1)<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Which Indian states share boundary with Myanmar?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Four North-Eastern States viz. Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram share international boundary with Myanmar.
