its leadership to protect big cats and assured support over five years with guaranteed funding of USD100 million (over <strong>Rs 800 crore<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>About World Meteorological Organisation (WMO)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is an intergovernmental organization.<\/li>\n<li>It originated from the <strong>International Meteorological Organization (IMO)<\/strong>, the roots of which were planted at the 1873 Vienna International Meteorological Congress.<\/li>\n<li>Established by the ratification of the <strong>WMO Convention on 23 March 1950<\/strong>, WMO became the <strong>specialised agency of the United Nations<\/strong> for meteorology (weather and climate), operational hydrology and related geophysical sciences a year later.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Secretariat<\/strong> \u2013 Geneva, Switzerland<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What does WMO do?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>WMO <i><strong>coordinates the activities of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services in 193 States and Territories<\/strong><\/i> so that basic weather, climate and water services are made available to anyone who needs them, when they need them.<\/li>\n<li>These weather, climate and water services contribute towards socio-economic development, environmental management and policy formulation.<\/li>\n<li>WMO guarantees the publication of observations and statistics and furthers the application of meteorology and hydrology (including the <i><strong>monitoring and predictions of climate change and ozone<\/strong><\/i>) to all aspects of human activities.<\/li>\n<li>WMO also encourages research and training in meteorology and hydrology and their related applications and <i><strong>contributes towards reducing the impact of weather- and climate-related hazards<\/strong><\/i>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Members &amp; Governance Structure<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>WMO Members include a total of 187 Member States (<strong>including India<\/strong>) and 6 Member Territories.<\/li>\n<li>The WMO is governed by the <strong>World Meteorological Congress<\/strong>, which is composed of all WMO Members.<\/li>\n<li>The World Meteorological Congress <i><strong>meets every four years to review, and give policy guidance to, WMO Programmes<\/strong><\/i>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>News Summary<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The United Nations announced that it had taken a significant step towards trying to fill a key gap in the fight against climate change: standardised, real-time tracking of greenhouse gases.<\/li>\n<li>The U.N.&#8217;s World Meteorological Organisation has come up with a new <strong>Global Greenhouse Gas Monitoring Infrastructure<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>About Global Greenhouse Gas Monitoring Infrastructure<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Currently, most GHG monitoring undertaken globally relies heavily on research capabilities and research funding.<\/li>\n<li>The intermittent nature of most research funding and the competitive processes used for its allocation makes sustained global monitoring difficult to achieve.<\/li>\n<li>The <i><strong>proposed Greenhouse Gas Monitoring Infrastructure will establish an internationally coordinated approach to observing network design, and to acquisition, international exchange and use of the resulting observations<\/strong><\/i>.<\/li>\n<li>It will engage and closely collaborate with\u00a0 both the broader scientific community, and other UN agencies and international coordination entities involved in GHG monitoring activities.<\/li>\n<li>The WMO&#8217;s new platform will <i><strong>integrate space-based and surface-based observing systems, and seek to clarify uncertainties about where GHG emissions end up<\/strong><\/i><\/li>\n<li>It should result in much faster and sharper data on how the planet&#8217;s atmosphere is changing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr close to Earth&#8217;s surface by \u201cgreenhouse gases.\u201d<\/strong> These heat-trapping gases can be thought of as a blanket wrapped around Earth, keeping the planet warmer than it would be
