{"id":33685,"date":"2022-12-02T04:19:34","date_gmt":"2022-12-01T22:49:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=33685"},"modified":"2025-04-20T00:39:18","modified_gmt":"2025-04-19T19:09:18","slug":"eu-agrees-on-russian-oil-price-cap-of-60-per-barrel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/eu-agrees-on-russian-oil-price-cap-of-60-per-barrel\/","title":{"rendered":"EU agrees on Russian oil price cap of $60 per barrel"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>What\u2019s in today\u2019s article?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Why in News?<\/li>\n<li>Russian oil price cap plan<\/li>\n<li>News Summary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why in News?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>European Union governments tentatively agreed on a $60 a barrel price cap on Russian seaborne oil, with an adjustment mechanism to keep the cap at 5% below the market price.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is Russian oil price cap plan?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>In September 2022, members of the G7 have agreed to impose a price cap on Russian <strong>oil <\/strong>in a bid to hit Moscow&#8217;s ability to finance the war in Ukraine.\n<ul>\n<li>G7 is a group of the most developed and the advanced economies of the world.<\/li>\n<li><u>US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan<\/u> are the current members of this group.<\/li>\n<li>G7 provides a platform to discuss and coordinate solutions to major global issues, especially in the areas of trade, security, economics, and climate change.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The plan, however, doesn\u2019t include Russian <strong>gas<\/strong>, which Europe is still quite dependent on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What oil price cap plan aims to do?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The introduction of a price cap on Russian oil means <u>countries that sign up to the policy will only be permitted to purchase Russian oil<\/u> and petroleum products transported via sea <u>that are sold at or below the price cap<\/u>.<\/li>\n<li>The price cap is being designed to limit Russia from profiting from its war of aggression while limiting the impact on global energy prices.<\/li>\n<li>S. and EU officials have been trying to convince countries including India, China and Turkey to join the coalition or to at least support the price cap.<\/li>\n<li>As per them, price cap is in the interests of all oil buyers from Russia as it will give them leverage to lower purchase prices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How will oil price cap plan be enforced?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>For countries that join the coalition, it would mean simply not buying Russian oil unless the price is reduced to where the cap is determined.\n<ul>\n<li>In other words, buyers could continue to buy Russian crude provided that they pay less than the <u>agreed-upon maximum price.<\/u><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>For countries that don\u2019t join the coalition, or buy oil higher than the cap price, they would lose access to all services provided by the coalition countries.\n<ul>\n<li>Services provided by the coalition countries include: <u>insurance, currency payment, facilitation and vessel clearances for their shipments.<\/u><\/li>\n<li>Eg. &#8211; London is a major global centre for maritime insurance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>G7 countries say they are aiming to reduce the price of oil, but not the quantity of oil that Russia sells, so as to control inflation globally while hurting the Russian economy.<\/li>\n<li>This could only work, of course, if all countries joined the coalition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>India\u2019s response to oil price cap plan<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>India\u2019s oil intake from Russia, which was minuscule prior to the war, has soared 50 times over.<\/li>\n<li>Indian government\u2019s stand is believed to be driven by its <strong>national interest<\/strong> which, at this moment, is to <u>provide affordable oil to Indian consumers<\/u>.\n<ul>\n<li>India has made it clear that it will examine the prospect of a price cap on Russian oil and will respond according to its supreme national interest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Experts believe that India might not abide by the price cap as it is receiving oil at discounted price from Russia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>News Summary<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The European Union will join the G-7 powers in imposing a $60-per-barrel price cap on Russian oil.\n<ul>\n<li>At $60 per barrel, the cap is <strong>a little lower<\/strong> than what major buyers of Russian oil, like China and India, currently pay.<\/li>\n<li>The price cap plan would <strong>not apply<\/strong> if buyers ship and insure the cargoes with firms from countries outside of the group imposing the cap.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The EU presidency, currently held by Czech Republic, confirmed that member state ambassadors had reached agreement on the price cap.<\/li>\n<li>The oil price cap will run alongside the EU\u2019s ban on imports of Russian oil.\n<ul>\n<li>An EU embargo on the <u>vast majority of Russian oil imports<\/u> kicks in on December 5.
