


{"id":33773,"date":"2022-12-20T03:31:52","date_gmt":"2022-12-19T22:01:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=33773"},"modified":"2025-04-20T01:29:33","modified_gmt":"2025-04-19T19:59:33","slug":"navy-gets-5th-scorpene-class-submarine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/navy-gets-5th-scorpene-class-submarine\/","title":{"rendered":"Navy gets 5th Scorpene-class submarine"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>What\u2019s in today\u2019s article?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The P-75 India project \u2013 about, first phase, second phase<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>News Summary<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why in News?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The fifth submarine of Project 75 to build Kalvari class diesel-electric attack submarines, Yard 11879, was delivered to the Indian Navy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The P-75 India project<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>In June 1999, the Cabinet Committee on Security had approved a plan for the Indian Navy to induct indigenously build and induct submarines by 2030.<\/li>\n<li>It was broken down in two phases \u2014 the P-75 and P-75I.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>About First Phase: P-75<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Under the first phase of P-75, signed in 2005, India and France signed a $3.75 billion contract for building <strong>six Kalvari class that is based on Scorpene<\/strong> class submarines.<\/li>\n<li>The executing company on the Indian side was Mazgaon Docks Ltd, and on the French side, it was DCNS, which is now called Naval Group.<\/li>\n<li>Under this project, the first submarine was commissioned in December 2017.<\/li>\n<li>Subsequently, the other five have been built and in April, 2022 INS Vagsheer was launched and would be commissioned by 2023.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>About Second Phase: P-75I<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The P-75I phase envisages the <strong>construction of six conventional submarines<\/strong> with better sensors and weapons and the Air Independent Propulsion System (AIP).<\/li>\n<li>Defence Acquisition Council cleared the project in 2019 <strong>under the strategic partnership (SP) model<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>The Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced in 2017 the much-anticipated SP model for the Indian private sector.\n<ul>\n<li>This was announced to promote Make in India in defence manufacturing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>SP model seeks to identify a few Indian private companies as Strategic Partners who would initially tie up with a few shortlisted foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to manufacture big-ticket military platforms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>News Summary<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The fifth submarine of the Project \u2013 75, Kalvari Class submarines, Yard 11879 was delivered to the Indian Navy.\n<ul>\n<li>Other submarines of the Kalvari class are INS Kalvari, INS Khanderi, INS Karanj, and INS Vela and INS Vagsheer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The submarine when commissioned will be known as INS Vagir.<\/li>\n<li>Launched in November, 2020, \u2018Vagir\u2019 commenced the sea trials in February, 2022, and has completed all major trials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/09FRGoQT-oxOYhAEpFS_b7lY2_3i-pmdKnYSutqTWp6_s0mA2V9P7cRhJN63yhSmdWgiyHqQCprVzN7vKMNx_C9Xt2en6CfZcN0SaKgt0wxyjMigt_7SBFzEwgNRB4621qx6mofGFT1TcgTs6Ue9jQ\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Image Caption: Submarines of India<\/p>\n<h2><strong>About Kalvari Class<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>This class of submarines have Diesel Electric transmission systems and are attack submarines also known as the \u2018hunter-killer\u2019 type, which means they are designed to target and sink adversary naval vessels.<\/li>\n<li>The Kalvari-class submarines have the capability of operating in a wide range of Naval combat including anti-warship and anti-submarine operations, intelligence gathering and surveillance, and naval mine laying.<\/li>\n<li>These submarines are around 220 feet long and have a height of 40 feet.<\/li>\n<li>The submarines can reach the highest speeds of 11 knots when surfaced and 20 knots when submerged.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1) When is submarine day celebrated in India?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Submarine Day is celebrated on 8 December every year to mark the formation of Indian Navy&#8217;s submarine arm with commissioning of it&#8217;s first submarine, erstwhile INS Kalvari, on 08 December 1967.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Q2) What is Project 75?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Project 75 includes the indigenous construction of six submarines based on the Scorpene-class developed by the French defence major, Naval Group (formerly DCNS), and Spanish state-owned entity Navantia.
