the 2500-km stretch from the Hindu Kush mountains to the end of Arunachal Pradesh &#8211; is due for a big earthquake (magnitude of over 8 on Richter scale) anytime.<\/li>\n<li>This is because of the <strong>huge amount of energy stored along the fault lines<\/strong> due to the continuous interaction of different tectonic plates.<\/li>\n<li>This energy can be released only in the form of massive earthquakes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi-test.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/media\/content\/ckeditor\/2023\/03\/23\/image-20230323080728-2.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Image Caption: Seismic Zone Map of India<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"media\">\n<div data-oembed-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=B59JSmS0ugk\">\n<div><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/B59JSmS0ugk\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How Big is the Earthquake in Afghanistan?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The earthquake was <strong>deep <\/strong>(origin 187.6 km below the earth\u2019s surface) and the epicentre of the earthquake was in northeastern Afghanistan (earthquake prone Hindu Kush region), close to Tajikistan borders.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Shallow earthquakes <\/strong>are generally more devastating because they carry greater energy when they emerge on the surface.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Deeper earthquakes<\/strong> lose much of their energy by the time they come to the surface &#8211;<strong> cause less damage<\/strong> and are more unlikely to be followed by <strong>aftershocks.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>However, they <strong>spread farther<\/strong> as the seismic waves move radially upwards to the surface.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>That is why the tremors were experienced in <strong>Punjab, Rajasthan\u2019s Jaipur, and J&amp;K<\/strong>, however, no damage is reported in India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>This earthquake was of <strong>6.5-magnitude<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Magnitude <\/strong>is a measure of how big the waves are, while the <strong>strength <\/strong>refers to the energy it carries.<\/li>\n<li>Magnitude 6 earthquakes have 10 times higher amplitude than magnitude 5 earthquakes. The energy differential is even higher, 32 times for every change of 1 in magnitude.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1) What are seismic waves?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Seismic waves are generated by an earthquake or similar energetic source and propagate within the Earth or along its surface.
