


{"id":33977,"date":"2022-12-12T03:28:07","date_gmt":"2022-12-11T21:58:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=33977"},"modified":"2025-04-20T03:23:10","modified_gmt":"2025-04-19T21:53:10","slug":"what-is-rcs-udan-scheme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-rcs-udan-scheme\/","title":{"rendered":"What is RCS UDAN Scheme?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>What\u2019s in today\u2019s article?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Why in News?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>RCS UDAN Scheme<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why in News?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Civil Aviation Minister recently stated that the country has effective international to domestic connectivity as well as domestic Tier-I to Tier-II connectivity.<\/li>\n<li>He further said that the Centre is currently focusing on last-mile connectivity in the country under the <strong>UDAN 4.2 scheme.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The RCS UDAN Scheme:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/NUdw2_ARVDmje5KhNhV1LGHHyilRk33EgyZD2PO_yqPvuqvnXDNC70CJrkST3FIJI_QGlt9Ee1Wio1VqIL_8u7-9IuG1X8_30X3sHsc7GRGBz_Oc3pm6vEXanIN7pBg57orAmIDpJWGFLEDr6K1fYA\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Image Caption: About UDAN Scheme<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Ministry of Civil Aviation\u2019s flagship program Regional Connectivity Scheme UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) was initiated in 2016 with the <u>objective of an enhanced aviation infrastructure and air connectivity in Tier II and Tier III cities<\/u><strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>To fulfil the aspirations of the common citizen, the scheme was formulated based on the review of <strong>The National Civil Aviation Policy (NCAP)-2016.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The scheme, which was planned to remain in force for a period of 10 years, has <strong>a self-financing mechanism<\/strong> with the development of <strong>Regional Connectivity Fund<\/strong> (RCF).<\/li>\n<li>The RCF funds the <strong>viability gap funding<\/strong> (VGF) requirements of the scheme through a levy on certain domestic flights, stimulating the growth and development of the sector.<\/li>\n<li>Under the scheme,\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Passengers <\/strong>have got the benefits of air connectivity,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Airlines <\/strong>have received concessions for operating regional routes,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unserved regions<\/strong> have received the direct and indirect benefits of air connectivity for their economic development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Phases of UDAN scheme:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>UDAN 1.0: <\/strong>36 new airports commissioned. 128 flight routes for 70 airports were awarded to 5 airline companies.<\/li>\n<li><strong>UDAN 2.0: <\/strong><u>It added a helipad for the first time<\/u>. In 2018, 73 unserved airports were announced.<\/li>\n<li><strong>UDAN 3.0: <\/strong>This included tourist routes, seaplanes to connect water aerodromes and routes under &#8216;UDAN&#8217; in the North-East region.<\/li>\n<li><strong>UDAN 4.0: <\/strong>78 new routes approved in 2020. In this phase, Kavaratti, Agatti and Minicoy islands of Lakshadweep will also be connected by new routes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>UDAN 4.1:<\/strong> Its focus is on connecting small airports, special helicopter and seaplane routes under UDAN. New routes have also been proposed under Sagarmala seaplane services.<\/li>\n<li><strong>UDAN 4.2:<\/strong> Under this, <strong>a small aircraft scheme<\/strong> dedicated to less than 20-seater aircraft, to ensure last-mile connectivity, has been launched.\n<ul>\n<li>According to the Ministry, 132 routes (16 are helicopter, 50 are seaplane and 66 are fixed wing routes) have been awarded under this.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>UDAN Scheme accomplishments:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>In the last 5 years, UDAN has significantly increased the regional air-connectivity in the country, with the number of operational airports increasing from 74 in 2014 to 141 now.<\/li>\n<li>68 underserved\/unserved destinations which include 58 Airports, 8 Heliports and 2 Water Aerodromes have been connected under UDAN scheme.<\/li>\n<li><strong>UDAN framework led to the formulation of:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lifeline <\/strong>UDAN (for transportation of medical cargo during pandemic) initiated in 2020.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Krishi <\/strong>UDAN (value realization of agriculture products especially in North-eastern Region {NER} and tribal districts).<\/li>\n<li><strong>International <\/strong>UDAN routes for NER to explore International Connectivity from \/ to Guwahati and Imphal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1) What are the benefits of UDAN scheme?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The main objective of the UDAN Scheme is to connect small and medium cities with big cities through air service.
