Marburg virus disease (MVD) in Uganda.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Marburg Virus Disease\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MVD, formerly known as Marburg haemorrhagic fever, is a <\/span><b>severe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, often <\/span><b>fatal illness caused by the<\/b> <b>Marburg virus.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>The Marburg virus <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a <\/span><b>zoonotic virus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that belongs to the Filoviridae family (filovirus), the same group of viruses that includes Ebola.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a<\/span><b> rare disease<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that <\/span><b>occurs in humans and non-human primate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s (chimpanzees, gorillas, and monkeys).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>named for the German city<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where scientists became ill with the disease&#8217;s<\/span><b> first known cases in 1967<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while<\/span><b> handling monkeys imported from Africa.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Marburg virus is most <\/span><b>commonly found in sub-Saharan Africa.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Marburg Virus Disease\u00a0<\/b><b>Transmission<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Marburg virus is naturally carried by<\/span><b> Egyptian fruit bats<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Rousettus aegyptiacus), which serve as its<\/span><b> primary reservoir.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>People <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">usually become i<\/span><b>nfected after prolonged exposure to bat-inhabited caves or mines.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once a human is infected, the virus<\/span><b> spreads through direct contact<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the blood, saliva, vomit, urine, faeces, and other<\/span><b> bodily fluids of an infected person<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can <\/span><b>also spread through contaminated objects<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as bedding, clothing or medical equipment that have come into contact with infected bodily fluids.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike some respiratory viruses, Marburg is <\/span><b>not airborne <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>does not spread through casual contact<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Transmission requires direct exposure to infected bodily fluids<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or contaminated materials.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Marburg Virus Disease\u00a0<\/b><b>Symptoms<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with Marburg <\/span><b>usually start getting sick 2-21 days<\/b> <b>after they are infected <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the virus.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Initial symptoms <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Fever<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chills<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle aches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Rash with both flat and raised bumps<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, often on the torso<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Chest pain<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sore throat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea, vomiting, and <\/span><b>diarrhea<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>As the disease advances<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, symptoms can become more severe, including <\/span><b>liver failure, delirium, shock, bleeding (hemorrhaging), <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>multi-organ dysfunction.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>In severe cases, death <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generally occurs <\/span><b>between eight and nine days after the onset of symptoms,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> primarily due to massive blood loss, multi-organ failure, and circulatory shock.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> average MVD case fatality rate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is around <\/span><b>50<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">%.
