(Global Water, Sanitation, &amp; Hygiene) including the Human Rights to Safe Drinking Water and Sanitation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Water for Sustainable Development \u2013<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Valuing water, the water-energy-food nexus and sustainable economic and urban development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Water for Climate, Resilience and Environment \u2013\n<ul>\n<li>Source to sea, biodiversity, climate, resilience and disaster risk reduction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Water for Cooperation \u2013<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Transboundary and international water cooperation, cross sectoral cooperation and water across the 2030 Agenda.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Water Action Decade \u2013<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Accelerating the implementation of the objectives of the Decade for Action, including through the UN Secretary-General\u2019s Action Plan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>What was the Need for a Water Conference in 2023?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Since the late 1970s, when the last Water Conference took place, the world has been focused on the business of rapid growth and development.<\/li>\n<li>But a growing global population \u2013 predicted by the UN to reach 8.5 billion by 2030 \u2013means the demands on our water resources are far greater than 50 years ago.<\/li>\n<li>Natural resources crises, including for water and food, come within the top 10 biggest risks facing humanity in the coming decade, in the World Economic Forum\u2019s Global Risks Report 2023.\n<ul>\n<li>It cites one UN estimate that places the <strong><u>gap between water demand and supply at 40% by 2030<\/u><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The World Meteorological Organization estimates that 3.6 billion people struggle to get enough water to meet their needs for at least one month every year.\n<ul>\n<li>It forecasts that <strong><u>5 billion people \u2013 more than half of humanity \u2013 will be facing the same plight by 2050<\/u><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s clear that we need to rethink our approach to how we can best allocate and value water, and that\u2019s what this Conference was about.<\/li>\n<li>This Conference was aimed at providing a roadmap for countries, sectors and river basins.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>What were the Water Conference\u2019s Outcomes?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The complexity of today\u2019s water problems was reflected in the conference\u2019s proceedings \u2013 a lot of talk, fragmented discussions, and no binding commitments.<\/li>\n<li>Instead, there were <strong>713 diverse voluntary commitments<\/strong> by philanthropic donors, governments, corporations, and NGOs.<\/li>\n<li>120 of these were relevant to India. They included a <strong><u>USD 50-billion commitment from the India to improve rural drinking water services under its Jal Jeevan Mission<\/u><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>About Jal Jeevan Mission<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Jal Jeevan Mission is a <strong><u>Centrally Sponsored Scheme<\/u><\/strong>, launched by the <strong>Ministry of Jal Shakti<\/strong> on 15<sup>th<\/sup> August, 2019.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Objective<\/strong> <strong>\u2013 <\/strong><i><strong>To provide to all households in rural India safe and adequate water through individual household tap connections by 2024<\/strong><\/i>.<\/li>\n<li>The Jal Jeevan Mission is based on a <strong>community approach<\/strong> to water.<\/li>\n<li>According to the government, the mission includes Information, Education and Communication as key components.<\/li>\n<li>The mission is meant to create a people&#8217;s movement for water, making it everyone\u2019s priority.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Key Facts for Prelims<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>W12+ Blueprint \u2013<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>W12+ Blueprint is a <strong><u>UNESCO platform<\/u><\/strong> hosting city pro\ufb01les and case studies of programs, technologies, policies that addresses common water security challenges.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It is an <strong>online information tool<\/strong> for informing those working on urban water issues, thought leadership, and advocacy around global water solutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1) When was the UN established and why?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945 after the Second World War by 51 countries committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Q2)<\/strong> <strong>What are the six main agencies of the UN?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The main bodies of the United Nations are <strong>the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the Trusteeship Council, the International Court of Justice, and the UN Secretariat<\/strong>.
