{"id":34331,"date":"2023-04-10T07:32:12","date_gmt":"2023-04-10T02:02:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=34331"},"modified":"2025-04-20T12:37:04","modified_gmt":"2025-04-20T07:07:04","slug":"project-tiger-and-international-big-cats-alliance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/project-tiger-and-international-big-cats-alliance\/","title":{"rendered":"Project Tiger and International Big Cats Alliance"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>What\u2019s in today\u2019s article?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Why in News?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>About the International Big Cats Alliance (IBCA)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>What is Project Tiger?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Tiger Census &#8211; All India Tiger Estimation (5th cycle)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why in News?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The PM recently launched the <strong>International Big Cats Alliance (IBCA)<\/strong>, inaugurated the programme \u2018<strong>Commemoration of 50 years of Project Tiger<\/strong>\u2019, and released the summary report of<strong> All India Tiger Estimation<\/strong> (5th cycle).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>About the International Big Cats Alliance (IBCA):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>In 2019, the PM of India called for <strong>an Alliance of Global Leaders<\/strong> to obliterate demand and firmly <strong>curb poaching and illegal wildlife trade in Asia<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Taking the message of the PM forward, the International Big Cats Alliance is being launched which will <strong>focus on the protection and conservation of seven major big cats<\/strong> of the world (Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Puma, Jaguar and Cheetah).<\/li>\n<li>The Alliance will have a<strong> membership of the range countries <\/strong>harbouring these species.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media\">\n<div data-oembed-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bL8Q1_JSoec\">\n<div><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bL8Q1_JSoec\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is Project Tiger?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a tiger conservation programme launched in <strong>1973<\/strong> as a<strong> centrally sponsored scheme <\/strong>by the Government of India and administered by the<strong> National Tiger Conservation Authority<\/strong> (NTCA).<\/li>\n<li>It aims at\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ensuring a viable population of the Bengal tiger <\/strong>(\u2018endangered\u2019) in its natural habitats,<\/li>\n<li>Protecting it from extinction,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Preserving areas of biological importance<\/strong> as a natural heritage that represent the diversity of ecosystems across the tiger&#8217;s range in the country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>For tiger conservation,<strong> Tiger Reserves <\/strong>were set up in 1973 and are governed by Project Tiger.\n<ul>\n<li>Initially, the Project covered <strong>nine tiger reserves<\/strong> spread over 18,278 sq km.<\/li>\n<li>Now, the project includes <strong>54 tiger reserves<\/strong> sprawling over around 75,000 sq km of the region.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The monitoring system <strong>M-STrIPES <\/strong>(Monitoring System for Tigers &#8211; Intensive Protection and Ecological Status) &#8211; is a software-based monitoring system developed (by NTCA in 2010)<strong> to assist patrol and protect tiger habitats.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>Tiger Census &#8211; All India Tiger Estimation (5th cycle):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/D7kWDFJWWZJCbbLCiYAW9MDg7wzcsa9hrHimsBpg-3UQlY7l6E62LqtpHC6CQBmowtIOKoAFwsYjcw-xCmu5acdLC8rVNYNNFcchD70yAJBvRNh7aSJjVCZV8JcOAVe_-y85nwLBeB6uQaVBq8NACH4\" alt=\"\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1) What is M-STrIPES?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>M-STrIPES (Monitoring System for Tigers &#8211; Intensive Protection and Ecological Status) is a software-based monitoring system launched across Indian tiger reserves by the Indian government&#8217;s National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) in 2010.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Q2) What is a centrally sponsored scheme?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This is a scheme that is implemented by state governments of India but are largely funded by the Central Government with a defined State Government share.
