Annan<\/strong> in 2005 as a United Nations General Trust Fund to support democratization efforts around the world.<\/li>\n<li>It was welcomed by the United Nations General Assembly in the Outcome Document of the <strong>2005 World Summit<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>UNDEF <i><strong>funds projects that empower civil society, promote human rights, and encourage the participation of all groups in democratic processes<\/strong><\/i>.<\/li>\n<li>The large majority of UNDEF funds go to local civil society organizations.<\/li>\n<li>In this way, UNDEF plays a novel and unique role in complementing the UN&#8217;s traditional work &#8211; work with Governments <strong>to strengthen democratic governance<\/strong> around the world.<\/li>\n<li>UNDEF depends entirely on <strong>voluntary contributions<\/strong> from Governments.<\/li>\n<li>Grants ranging from US$100,000 to US$300,000, support initiatives in the areas of \u2013\n<ul>\n<li>Support for Electoral Processes<\/li>\n<li>Women&#8217;s Empowerment<\/li>\n<li>Media and Freedom of Information<\/li>\n<li>Rule of Law and Human Rights<\/li>\n<li>Strengthening Civil Society Interaction with Government<\/li>\n<li>Youth Engagement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>UNDEF Composition<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Advisory Board<\/strong>, constituted by the Secretary General, includes eight largest Member State contributors and six other states to reflect diverse geographical representation.<\/li>\n<li><strong><u>India has been a member of the Board since the beginning<\/u><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The Advisory Board considers the proposals from NGOs and recommends proposals for approval by the Secretary General.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>India\u2019s Contribution to UNDEF<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>India gave $5 million to the fund in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2011.<\/li>\n<li>The contributions began dipping from 2012 ($4.71 m) and the following year it was $1.85 million.<\/li>\n<li>After no contribution in 2017, India was back with $100,000 in 2018 and 2019.
