Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated an International Big Cat Alliance conference in Mysuru, Karnataka.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>About Project Tiger<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Project Tiger was launched by the Government of India in <strong>1973<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is a <strong><u>Centrally Sponsored Scheme<\/u><\/strong> under the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Objectives<\/strong> <strong>\u2013<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>To reduce factors that lead to the depletion of tiger habitats and to mitigate them by suitable management.<\/li>\n<li>To ensure a viable tiger population for economic, scientific, cultural, aesthetic and ecological values.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Activities funded by Project Tiger include \u2013<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Anti-poaching initiatives;<\/li>\n<li>Strengthening infrastructure within tiger reserves;<\/li>\n<li>Habitat improvement and water development;<\/li>\n<li>Addressing man-animal conflicts;<\/li>\n<li>Supporting States for staff development and capacity building in tiger reserves;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Project Tiger <i><strong>has been successful in increasing the population of the tigers<\/strong><\/i>.<\/li>\n<li>National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) conducts <strong>Tiger Census<\/strong> across India, every four years.\n<ul>\n<li>As per the last Tiger Census conducted in <strong>2018-19<\/strong>, tiger population in India has increased to <strong>2967<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>India now accounts for about <strong><u>70% of the world\u2019s tiger population<\/u><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Tiger Census Report for 2022<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Though the survey and data gathering, for the latest cycle, was completed in 2022 some analysis is pending.<\/li>\n<li>Due to this, the NTCA has only publicised the lowest bound of animals present based on the number of unique tigers photographed via camera traps.<\/li>\n<li>This year, <strong>3080<\/strong> unique tigers were photographed.<\/li>\n<li>This year, the modelling estimates, or the number of tigers that haven\u2019t been captured on cameras, is reportedly incomplete and so the publicised figure \u2013 of <strong>3,167<\/strong> \u2013 is subject to revision.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What does it reveal about the Health of Tiger Reserves?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Population increase was \u201csubstantial,\u201d the report said, in Shivalik and the Gangetic flood plains.\n<ul>\n<li>There were 804 unique tigers photographed in the Shivalik-Gangetic plains, which is higher than the estimated population of 646 in 2018.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>However, <strong><u>in the Western Ghats, the tiger population has reduced<\/u><\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>The protected areas within the Western Ghats are some of the most biodiverse in the country.<\/li>\n<li>As of 2018, the tiger population here was estimated at 981.<\/li>\n<li>In 2022, 824 unique tigers were recorded, pointing to a decline in some regions.<\/li>\n<li>Although tiger populations in the Periyar landscape was stable, tiger occupancy outside has decreased.<\/li>\n<li>Local extinctions of tiger populations were noticed in Sirsi, Kanyakumari, and Srivilliputhur, the report noted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What are the Causes of Local Decline?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><u>India\u2019s tiger population annually grows at about 6% an annum<\/u><\/strong> with high mortality rates among cubs.<\/li>\n<li>Apart from natural mortality, the other causes are \u2013\n<ul>\n<li>Threats from invasive species,<\/li>\n<li>Man-animal conflict,<\/li>\n<li>Infrastructure development that impedes movement of the animal,<\/li>\n<li>Disease,<\/li>\n<li>Poaching and many reserves not having sufficient prey to sustain viable populations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>About National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>National Tiger Conservation Authority is a <strong>statutory body<\/strong>, constituted under <strong><u>Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972<\/u><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It was established in 2005 following the recommendation of the Tiger Task Force.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Objectives \u2013<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>To provide statutory authority to <strong>Project Tiger<\/strong> so that compliance of its directives become legal.<\/li>\n<li>To Foster accountability of Centre-State in management of Tiger Reserves.<\/li>\n<li>To address livelihood interests of local people in areas surrounding Tiger Reserves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Functions \u2013<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>To approve the tiger conservation plan prepared by the state government.<\/li>\n<li>To ensure that the tiger reserves
