It is followed by Gujarat and Andaman, and Nicobar Islands.\n<ul>\n<li>Maharashtra, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Goa and Kerala too have mangrove.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>In India, mangrove ecosystems are\u00a0legally protected by the Coastal Regulation Zone Notification, 2011 under the Environment Protection Act, 1986.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>News Summary<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>At the United Nations climate summit \u2013 the 27th Session of Conference of Parties (COP27) \u2013 held at the Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt, India was among the first countries to join the Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>MAC is an initiative\u00a0spearheaded by the United Arab Emirates\u00a0(UAE) in partnership with Indonesia to strengthen efforts on conserving and restoring mangrove forests.<\/li>\n<li>It aims to raise awareness about the role of mangroves as a \u201cnature-based\u201d solution to climate change.<\/li>\n<li><strong>India is among the first countries<\/strong>\u00a0to join the alliance; the others include\u00a0Australia, Japan, Spain, and Sri Lanka.<\/li>\n<li>As part of this alliance, an international mangrove research centre will be established in Indonesia.\n<ul>\n<li>This centre will conduct studies on mangrove ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration and ecotourism.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Working<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The intergovernmental alliance will work on a voluntary basis and countries will set their deadlines for mangrove conservation.\n<ul>\n<li>The parties will decide their own commitments and deadlines regarding planting and restoring mangroves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It will be difficult to hold members accountable.
