India was represented by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>ASEAN \u2013 India Summit<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>ASEAN-India Summits are held annually. It provides opportunity for India and ASEAN to engage at the highest level.<\/li>\n<li>PM Modi attended the 18th ASEAN-India Summit held virtually in October 2021. This year\u2019s summit is attended by the Vice President of India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>ASEAN-India Engagement<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/media\/editor_images\/2022\/11\/13\/14\/17\/4\/6370af0888f5c905b4aba895_OI.PNG\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ASEAN and India became\u00a0<strong>Summit-level partners in 2002<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Strategic partners in 2012<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>There is\u00a0<strong>ample closeness<\/strong>\u00a0between India&#8217;s &#8220;<strong>Indo Pacific Oceans Initiative<\/strong>&#8221; and\u00a0<strong>ASEAN&#8217;s &#8220;Outlook on Indo Pacific&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>India firmly believes that a &#8220;Cohesive and Responsive ASEAN&#8221; is essential for &#8220;Security and Growth for All in the Region&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>The year 2022 marks\u00a0<strong>30 years of ASEAN-India relations<\/strong>\u00a0and it has been\u00a0designated as ASEAN-India Friendship Year\u00a0by the leaders in October 2021.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>India-ASEAN Trade Relation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>In general,\u00a0ASEAN is India\u2019s 4th largest trading partner\u00a0and\u00a0India is ASEAN\u2019s 7th largest trading partner\u00a0accounting for 10.2% of India\u2019s total trade.<\/li>\n<li>India\u2019s total trade with ASEAN from April 2021 to March 2022 was $78.90 billion.\u00a0Balance of trade is highly favourable to ASEAN.\n<ul>\n<li>On the other hand, ASEAN became China\u2019s largest trading partner in 2020 and remains so.<\/li>\n<li>ASEAN\u2019s total trade with China in for the period January to April 2022 amounted to $274.50 billion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>ASEAN and India have set a trade target of 200 billion USD by 2022.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Investment<\/strong>: Between 2000-2021 cumulative FDIs from ASEAN to India was $117.88 billion. These were mainly accounted for by Singaporean investments in India ($115 billion).\n<ul>\n<li>Indian investment into ASEAN since April 2019 till March 2022 is US$ 55.5 billion out of which US$ 51.5 billion investment is in Singapore.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>On trade and investment, the review of\u00a0ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA)\u00a0has been long pending. India has called for an early review of the Agreement.\n<ul>\n<li>AITIGA has been in place since 2010.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>India\u2019s Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>In November 2019, while participating in 14<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0East Asia Summit (EAS), PM Modi launched the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI).<\/li>\n<li>IPOI seeks to ensure security and stability of the regional maritime domain.<\/li>\n<li>IPOI is an open, non-treaty-based initiative for countries to work together for cooperative and collaborative solutions to common challenges in the region.<\/li>\n<li>IPOI draws on existing regional architecture and mechanisms to focus on seven pillars:\n<ul>\n<li>Maritime Security<\/li>\n<li>Maritime Ecology<\/li>\n<li>Maritime Resources<\/li>\n<li>Capacity Building and Resource Sharing<\/li>\n<li>Disaster Risk Reduction and Management<\/li>\n<li>Science, Technology and Academic Cooperation<\/li>\n<li>Trade Connectivity and Maritime Transport<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>ASEAN Outlook for the Indo-Pacific (AOIP)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>In June 2019, the ten-member ASEAN has adopted the \u2018ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>It outlines the ASEAN\u2019s concept and strategy of the Indo-Pacific.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>News Summary<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Recently, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar addressed the 19th ASEAN-India Summit in Phnom Penh. Cambodia, as the current Chair of ASEAN, hosted this Summit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Key Highlights<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>At the end of summit, both sides released a joint statement reaffirming the importance of\n<ul>\n<li>maintaining and promoting peace, stability, maritime safety, freedom of navigation and overflight in the Indo-Pacific region, and<\/li>\n<li>commitment to peaceful resolution of disputes, in accordance with international law, including UNCLOS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The joint declaration called\u00a0for establishing a comprehensive strategic partnership\u00a0and enhancing cooperation against terrorism.<\/li>\n<li>The ASEAN states appreciated India\u2019s support for ASEAN centrality in the evolving regional architecture.<\/li>\n<li>It also appreciated India\u2019s continued contribution to regional peace, security, and prosperity and to ASEAN integration and the ASEAN community-building process.<\/li>\n<li>India and ASEAN also agreed to enhance cooperation against terrorism and transnational crimes, including international economic crimes and money laundering, cybercrime, drugs and human trafficking, and arms smuggling.<\/li>\n<li>They also called for deepening cooperation in military medicine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ASEAN-India Summit was held recently in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
