{"id":3483,"date":"2023-03-01T01:02:34","date_gmt":"2023-02-28T19:32:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=3483"},"modified":"2025-03-26T12:40:50","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T07:10:50","slug":"what-is-the-windsor-framework","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-the-windsor-framework\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Windsor Framework?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Windsor Framework:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The \u2018Windsor Framework\u2019 will <strong>replace the Northern Ireland Protocol.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What is Northern Ireland Protocol?<\/h3>\n<p>Northern Ireland is a British-ruled province and part of the United Kingdom that shares a long porous border with Ireland, a member of the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>Trade over the open border when Britain left the EU was one of the most difficult parts of the Brexit negotiations which culminated in the Northern Ireland Protocol.<\/p>\n<p>The protocol is <strong>part of the Brexit deal, which sets Northern Ireland&#8217;s trade rules<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It <strong>keeps Northern Ireland inside the EU&#8217;s single market<\/strong> for goods.<\/p>\n<p>It <strong>keeps the Irish land border open<\/strong> but means <strong>products arriving into Northern Ireland <\/strong>from the rest of the UK <strong>are subject to checks and controls.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The checks made trade between Great Britain and Northern Ireland cumbersome.<\/p>\n<p>Features of Windsor Framework:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The framework has two crucial aspects \u2013 the introduction of a two lanes system and the \u2018Stormont Brake\u2019.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The two lanes:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Goods from Britain destined for Northern Ireland<\/strong> will travel through a <strong>new &#8220;green lane&#8221;<\/strong>, with a separate &#8220;<strong>red lane&#8221; for goods at risk of moving onto the EU.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Products coming into Northern Ireland through the <strong>green lane<\/strong> would see <strong>checks and paperwork significantly reduced.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Red lane goods<\/strong> would still be <strong>subject to checks.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Bans on certain products<\/strong> &#8211; like chilled sausages &#8211; entering Northern Ireland from Great Britain <strong>would be removed.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Northern Ireland would also no longer have to follow certain EU rules<\/strong>, for example, on VAT and alcohol duties. The new agreement reduces the proportion of EU rules applied in Northern Ireland to less than 3%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stormont brake:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Under this, the <strong>democratically elected Northern Ireland Assembly<\/strong> <strong>can oppose new EU goods rules<\/strong> that would have significant and lasting effects on everyday lives in Northern Ireland.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>brake cannot be used for &#8220;trivial reasons<\/strong>&#8221; but reserved <strong>for &#8220;significantly different&#8221; rules<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Once the UK tells the EU the brake has been triggered, the rule cannot be implemented.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>can only be applied if the UK and EU agree.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What is Brexit?<\/h3>\n<p>\u2018Brexit\u2019 is the name given to the United Kingdom\u2019s departure from the European Union.
