In Urban Infra to Meet Needs of Growing Population: World Bank Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>What\u2019s in today\u2019s article:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Highlights of the report<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Suggestions in the report\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why In News?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>According to a new World Bank report, India would need to invest $840 billion in urban infrastructure over the next 15 years (an average of $55 billion per year) to adequately address the needs of its rapidly rising urban population.<\/li>\n<li>The report was titled as &#8220;Financing India&#8217;s Infrastructure Needs: Commercial Financing Constraints and Policy Action Prospects\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>It emphasises the urgent need to leverage\u00a0<strong>additional private investments<\/strong>\u00a0to cover rising financial gaps.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Highlights of the report:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/media\/editor_images\/2022\/11\/16\/12\/47\/11\/63748e77442c4a05abdd2b59_OI.PNG\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Urban population:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>By 2036, 600 million people or 40% of the population, would be living in urban areas.<\/li>\n<li>This is projected to place\u00a0<strong>extra strain on India&#8217;s already overburdened urban infrastructure<\/strong>\u00a0and services, with increased demand for clean drinking water, reliable power supply, efficient and safe road transportation, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Financing of urban projects:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Currently, the central and state governments fund more than 75% of city infrastructure, with ULBs funding the 15% with their own surplus revenues.<\/li>\n<li>Only 5% of Indian cities&#8217;
