2023<\/strong> (8th consecutive edition) of higher education institutions in New Delhi.<\/li>\n<li>In all, 5,543 institutions offered themselves for ranking under \u2018overall\u2019, category-specific and\/or domain-specific rankings for India Rankings 2023.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media\">\n<div data-oembed-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ONAitH9XpfA\">\n<div><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ONAitH9XpfA\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>About:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The NIRF was launched by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD now <strong>Ministry of Education<\/strong>) in <strong>2015 <\/strong>(first edition came in 2016).<\/li>\n<li>This framework, which is the <strong>first-ever effort<\/strong> by the Government of India, <strong>outlines a methodology<\/strong> to rank HEIs across the country.<\/li>\n<li>While participation in the NIRF was initially voluntary, <strong>it became mandatory<\/strong> in 2018 for all government-run educational institutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ranking parameters:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u25cf \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Categories:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Initially, NIRF ranked the best institutions across 11 categories &#8211; overall national ranking, universities, engineering, college, medical, management, pharmacy, law, architecture, dental and research.<\/li>\n<li>With the addition of 2 new categories (Innovation and Agriculture &amp; Allied Sectors), the existing portfolio of India Rankings has <strong>increased to 13 categories.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Significance:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The NIRF process gives <strong>detailed feedback regarding a HEI\u2019s strengths and weaknesses.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The NIRF assisted institutions in gaining a better understanding of their <strong>annual performance as well as their competitors<\/strong> and peer performers.<\/li>\n<li>This provides other benefits, such as <strong>attracting industry for better placement<\/strong> and serving as a <strong>credible resource for parents<\/strong> and students to learn about the HEIs.<\/li>\n<li>The NIRF indirectly assists top-performing institutions in<strong> building their brand and gaining widespread recognition<\/strong> without incurring additional marketing and branding costs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>How to improve NIRF Ranking?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u25cf \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why Does India Require its Own Ranking Framework?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Subjective global rankings:<\/strong> The government-run HEIs were <strong>dissatisfied with their rankings<\/strong> in the QS World University Rankings and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.\n<ul>\n<li>Their ranking methods rely on the opinions of a small group of people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Case of China:<\/strong> When China faced the same dilemma around, they responded by creating their own university ranking system, called the Shanghai Rankings.\n<ul>\n<li>Therefore, India has also launched its own rankings, <strong>with parameters tailored to the Indian scenario.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>To make it international in character:<\/strong> Though the Shanghai Rankings were designed to be worldwide from the start, the NIRF solely ranks Indian HEIs.\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>However, the long-term plan is to give it an international character (especially for developing countries).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Highlights of the NIRF 2023:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Overall rankings: <\/strong>The IIT-Madras remained the best educational institution in overall rankings for the<strong> fifth consecutive term<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>It has also been ranked the<strong> best engineering college for the eighth consecutive year<\/strong> (from 2016 to 2023).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Best university:<\/strong> The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru ranked as the best university in the country<strong> for eight years in a row.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It stood first in <strong>\u2018Research Institutions\u2019 <\/strong>category too, for the third consecutive year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Best college:<\/strong> Miranda House, Delhi is ranked the best college for the seventh consecutive year.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Top management institute:<\/strong> Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad is the top management institute for the fourth consecutive year.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Top in pharmaceutical studies:<\/strong> National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Hyderabad is ranked number one (first time) for pharmaceutical studies.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Best medical and dental college:<\/strong> The AIIMS, Delhi is ranked the best medical college (for the sixth consecutive year), and Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, Chennai is the top dental college.\n<ul>\n<li>AIIMS is ranked at sixth position in Overall category thereby improving from its ninth position in 2022.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Best law college: <\/strong>National Law School of India University, Bengaluru is ranked the best law college in the country for the sixth consecutive year.<\/li>\n<li><strong>First in Architecture subject:<\/strong> IIT-Roorkee stood at first position in Architecture subject.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Agriculture sector: <\/strong>Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi took the top slot in \u2018Agriculture and Allied Sectors\u2019.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Topper in innovation category:<\/strong> IIT-Kanpur topped the \u2018Innovation\u2019 category.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1) What is the Revitalising Infrastructure and System in Education (RISE) scheme?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Announced in the Budget 2018-19, the government will provide low-cost funds\/loans to educational institutions for infrastructure development under the RISE scheme.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Q2) What is EQUIP (Education Quality Upgradation and Inclusion Programme)?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>EQUIP aims at ushering transformations in India\u2019s higher education system by implementing strategic interventions (like double the GER in higher education) in the
