This area sends only 20 MLAs to the Assembly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u25cf \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/bBZZw9mWIQvUS5tqWTfCLZ7B-MbYi2uAmDW_RARhSvM4KPRQLDuSyw4APUdV-U7w0kd10cOooBqh9aIwr4oRubD_oeT02oaWjNTVyR3ozovrQxGi95efBJNIp_FO-eO0D9RmOnB9v_UKddygtwzdt8Y\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What&#8217;s Behind the Violence in Manipur?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The recent protests were triggered by the Manipur HC\u2019s direction to the State to pursue a 10-year-old recommendation to <strong>grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the non-tribal Meitei community.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The Court\u2019s order has brought the <strong>historical tensions<\/strong> between the valley-dwelling Meitei community and the state\u2019s hill tribes to a boil.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why does the Meitei Community want ST Status?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The demand for ST status arose from the<strong> need to preserve the community<\/strong>, and save the ancestral land, tradition, culture and language of the Meiteis.<\/li>\n<li>As per the arguments forwarded by the community in the court:\n<ul>\n<li>The community has been <strong>victimised <\/strong>without any constitutional safeguards to date and have been gradually marginalised in their ancestral land.<\/li>\n<li>Constituting 59% of the total population of Manipur in 1951 has now been <strong>reduced to 44% as per 2011 Census data.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why are Tribal groups against ST Status for Meiteis?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The tribal groups say the Meiteis <strong>have a demographic and political advantage besides being more advanced<\/strong> academically and in other aspects.<\/li>\n<li>The Manipuri language of the Meiteis is included in the <strong>Eighth Schedule<\/strong> of the Constitution.<\/li>\n<li>Sections of the Meitei community &#8211; which is predominantly Hindu &#8211; are already classified under<strong> Scheduled Castes (SC) or Other Backward Classes (OBC)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Hence, the claim that Meiteis need ST status to protect their culture and identity is self-defeating.<\/li>\n<li>They feel the ST status to the Meiteis would lead to <strong>loss of job opportunities<\/strong> and allow them to acquire land in the hills and push the tribals out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Is this the only Reason for the Conflict?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Pro-government groups in Manipur claim that some tribal groups with vested interests are trying to scuttle the <strong>CM\u2019s crusade against drugs.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The anti-drug drive began with <strong>destroying poppy fields <\/strong>and the theory that <strong>illegal settlers from Myanmar<\/strong> are behind clearing forests and government lands to grow opium and cannabis.\n<ul>\n<li>These settlers are ethnically related to the <strong>Kuki-Zomi <\/strong>people of Manipur.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The first violent protest was against the <strong>eviction of the residents of a Kuki village<\/strong> allegedly in violation of<strong> Article 371C<\/strong>, which confers some administrative autonomy to the tribal-dominated hill areas of Manipur.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media\">\n<div data-oembed-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZeDPVbntS1s\">\n<div><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZeDPVbntS1s\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>News Summary Regarding Peace Committee:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Government of India has constituted a Peace Committee in Manipur <strong>under the chairpersonship of the Governor, Manipur<\/strong> (Anusuiya Uikey).\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The peace committee<\/strong> was part of a series of measures, including a judicial probe panel, announced by the Union Home Minister at the end of his four-day visit to Manipur.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>The members of the committee<\/strong> include the CM, a few ministers in the state government, MP, MLAs and leaders from different political parties.<\/li>\n<li>The committee includes<strong> former civil servants, educationists, litterateurs, artists,<\/strong> social workers and representatives of <strong>different ethnic groups.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The mandate of the committee<\/strong> will be to strengthen social cohesiveness, mutual understanding and facilitate cordial communication between various ethnic groups.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1) What is the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It lists the official languages of the Republic of India.
