Jaglan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What is a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG)?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>PVTGs are <strong>more vulnerable among the tribal groups<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>Due to this factor, more developed and assertive tribal groups take a major chunk of the tribal development funds, because of which PVTGs need more funds directed for their development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>In this context, in 1975, the Government of India declared 52 tribal groups as PVTGs on the recommendation of the <strong>Dhebar Commission<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>Currently, there are <strong>75 PVTGs out of 705 Scheduled Tribes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The PVTGs are spread over 18 states and one <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/union-territories\/\" target=\"_blank\">Union Territory<\/a> (UT), in the country (2011 census).\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Odisha has the highest number (more than 2.5 lakh) of PVTGs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Characteristics of PVTGs:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Population \u2013 stagnant\/declining<\/li>\n<li>Technology \u2013 pre-agricultural<\/li>\n<li>Literacy Level \u2013 extremely low<\/li>\n<li>Economy \u2013 Subsistence level<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Government Scheme(s) for PVTGs<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Ministry of Tribal Affairs implements a scheme in the name of <strong>&#8216;Development of Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs)<\/strong>&#8216;.<\/li>\n<li>It is a <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/centrally-sponsored-scheme\/\" target=\"_blank\">Centrally Sponsored Scheme<\/a> having a provision of 100% Central assistance to 18 states and Union territory of Andaman &amp; Nicobar Islands.<\/li>\n<li>The scheme of Development of PVTGs aims at socio-economic development of PVTGs in a comprehensive manner, while retaining their culture and heritage.<\/li>\n<li>As a part of the scheme, <strong>State Governments undertakes projects that are tailored to cater to sectors like education, health and livelihood schemes for the PVTGs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>About Shompen Tribe<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Shompen are one of the least studied Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) in India.<\/li>\n<li>They reside in dense tropical Rain forest of Great Nicobar Island of Andaman and Nicobar group of Islands.<\/li>\n<li>The Shompen habitat is also an important biological hotspot and there are two National Parks and one Biosphere Reserve namely:\n<ul>\n<li>Campbell Bay National Park,<\/li>\n<li>Galathea National Park and<\/li>\n<li>Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Though according to Census (2011), the <strong>estimated population of Shompen is 229<\/strong>, the exact population of Shompen is unknown till today.<\/li>\n<li>They are semi-nomadic hunter-gatherer and their main sources of livelihood are hunting, gathering, fishing and little bit horticultural activities in a rudimentary form.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Primarily, they used to hunt wild pig, python, monitor Lizard, crocodile, see turtle etc.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1.
