


{"id":35981,"date":"2023-06-21T10:06:53","date_gmt":"2023-06-21T04:36:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=35981"},"modified":"2025-04-21T14:02:45","modified_gmt":"2025-04-21T08:32:45","slug":"submersible-vs-submarine-tourist-submersible-missing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/submersible-vs-submarine-tourist-submersible-missing\/","title":{"rendered":"Submersible vs Submarine"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>What\u2019s in today\u2019s article?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Why in News?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>What are Submersibles?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The Titan<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>How are Submersibles different from Submarines?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why in News?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Titan, the vessel that went missing in the area of the Titanic wreck in the North Atlantic, is classified as a submersible, not a submarine.<\/li>\n<li>Numerous complications &#8211; weather conditions, the lack of light at night, the state of the sea and water temperature, depth (14000 feet) &#8211; could hinder the effort to rescue the five people aboard the deep-diving submersible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What are Submersibles?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Submersibles are <strong>small, limited range watercrafts<\/strong> designed for a set mission, that are built with characteristics that allow them to operate in a specific environment<\/li>\n<li>These vessels are typically able to be <strong>fully submerged into water and cruise using their own power supply<\/strong> and air renewal system.<\/li>\n<li>While some submersibles are <strong>remotely-operated<\/strong> and essentially manually controlled or programmed robots, these usually operate unmanned.<\/li>\n<li>Vessels like the missing Titan are known as <strong>human-occupied vehicles<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Titan:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It was designed <strong>to transport five people to depths of around 4,000m<\/strong> in order to reach the Titanic shipwreck, which lies approximately 370 miles south of Newfoundland, Canada.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Made of titanium and carbon fiber<\/strong>, it weighs around 10,432 kgs and can also take on speeds of about 3 knots\/5.5 km per hour.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It doesn\u2019t have a lot of propulsion<\/strong> so it can\u2019t sail great distances but it has just enough propulsion to sail and operate in and around the wreck and then come back to the surface.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Experts believe that the Titan likely lost power or communication<\/strong> with its mother ship, the Polar Prince.\n<ul>\n<li>In this case, the Titan&#8217;s safety mechanism would activate, causing the ship to release the weight that it had been using to descend to the shipwreck.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u25cf \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/edEnOPbJXJEiAeXhtSXJc8ZVsdNSjK3Ru-bYRiT0Us0OXT8kYfa6PqP46nfczyowtl42sFt6MTnq3M3d24dGNNOWQcfxz2qWXAvDXBdLJprj3UXBhb347YZeqJYbjY4E7ATyS0ywsY6hIJvNyIpSxPM\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How are Submersibles different from Submarines?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The primary difference between a submersible and a submarine is that the <strong>former is launched from a mother vessel<\/strong>, or home vessel.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Submersibles <\/strong>are typically launched on a raft or platform which is placed into water and ultimately descends down via four electric thrusters which help it to reach speeds of 3 knots.<\/li>\n<li>When it returns to the surface, it must be loaded back onto the surface platform.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Submersibles don&#8217;t have<\/strong> things like typically large propulsion systems, they don&#8217;t have ballast systems. They also have<strong> limited power reserves.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Unlike submarines, submersibles also have <strong>a viewport and external cameras to view the outside space surrounding the vessel<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1) How does a submarine work?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Submarines propel themselves forward through the water using propellers or jets that shoot out water. These can be powered by diesel engines, or even nuclear reactors.
