Morocco on September 8 night, killing hundreds of people and damaging buildings, including in the historic city of Marrakech.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Marrakech is a UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>So far, more than 2000 people have died, mostly in Marrakech and five provinces near the quake\u2019s epicentre.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is an Earthquake?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/media\/editor_images\/2023\/9\/11\/12\/41\/58\/64febdbee48b4005af08acb1_OI.PNG\" \/><\/li>\n<li>An earthquake is <strong>an intense shaking of the ground<\/strong> caused by movement under the earth\u2019s surface.\n<ul>\n<li>The location below the earth\u2019s surface where the earthquake starts is called the<\/li>\n<li>The location directly above the hypocentre on the surface of the earth is called the <strong>epicentre<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It happens when <strong>two blocks (tectonic plates) of the earth suddenly slip<\/strong> past one another releasing stored-up \u2018elastic strain\u2019 energy in the form of seismic waves.<\/li>\n<li>These <strong>spread through the earth <\/strong>and cause the shaking of the ground.<\/li>\n<li>They are measured on scales called the &#8211;\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Moment Magnitude Scale<\/strong> (Mw), based on the total moment (a product of the distance a fault moved and the force required to move it) release of the earthquake.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Richter <\/strong>scale (magnitude scale) &#8211; energy released &#8211; 0-10.<\/li>\n<li>The intensity scale\/<strong>Mercalli<\/strong> scale &#8211; visible damage &#8211; 1-12.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Earthquakes continue to remain the most common natural hazard that <strong>cannot be predicted<\/strong> as no early warning systems can be developed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>News Summary: Earthquake in Morocco<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><img decoding=\"async\" the <strong>High Atlas Mountain range<\/strong>, about 72 kilometers from Marrakech.<\/li>\n<li>The quake had a <strong>magnitude of 6.8<\/strong>, meaning it is classed as \u201cstrong.\u201d It also struck at a relatively shallow depth, making it more destructive.\n<ul>\n<li>As per the US Geological Survey (USGS),the focus was 18.5 km below the Earth\u2019s surface, though Morocco\u2019s own seismic agency pegged the depth at 11 km.<\/li>\n<li>Either way, it was a fairly shallow quake.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Such quakes are <u>generally more dangerous as they carry more energy<\/u> to the surface, when compared to quakes that occur deeper underneath the surface.\n<ul>\n<li>While deeper quakes do indeed spread farther as seismic waves move radially upwards to the surface, they lose energy while travelling greater distances.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><u>Earthquakes of this size in the region are uncommon<\/u>, according to the US Geological Survey, but not unexpected.\n<ul>\n<li>Nine quakes with a magnitude of 5 or higher have hit the area since 1900, but none of them have had a magnitude higher than 6.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why the Morocco quake occurred?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Background<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/media\/editor_images\/2023\/9\/11\/12\/42\/2\/64febdc2e48b4005af08acb3_OI.PNG\" \/><\/li>\n<li>While seismicity rates are indeed lower in the region, making earthquakes rarer, they are not completely unheard of.<\/li>\n<li>According to the USGS, large destructive earthquakes have been recorded and reported from Morocco in the western Mediterranean.<\/li>\n<li>Such quakes occur due to the <u>northward convergence of the African plate with respect to the Eurasian plate along a complex plate boundary<\/u>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reasons behind Morocco quake<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>With respect to Morocco\u2019s quake, the USGS attributed it to <strong>oblique-reverse faulting<\/strong> at shallow depth within the Moroccan High Atlas Mountain range.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is oblique-reverse faulting?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fault<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>A fault is a fracture or zone of fractures between two blocks of rock.<\/li>\n<li>Faults allow the blocks to move relative to each other, causing earthquakes if the movement occurs rapidly.<\/li>\n<li>During a quake, the rock on one side of the fault suddenly slips with respect to the other.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Different types of faults<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Scientists use the angle of the fault with respect to the surface (known as the dip) and the direction of the slip along the fault to classify faults.<\/li>\n<li><u>Faults which move along the direction of the dip plane<\/u> are <strong>dip-slip faults<\/strong>, whereas <u>faults which move horizontally<\/u> are known as <strong>strike-slip faults<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Oblique-slip faults<\/strong> show characteristics of both dip-slip and strike-slip faults.<\/li>\n<li>The term <strong>reverse<\/strong> refers to a situation that the upper block, above the fault plane, moves up and over the lower block.<\/li>\n<li><img decoding=\"async\"
