


{"id":3803,"date":"2023-03-06T03:07:55","date_gmt":"2023-03-05T21:37:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=3803"},"modified":"2025-03-26T19:31:16","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T14:01:16","slug":"what-is-the-united-nations-high-seas-treaty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-the-united-nations-high-seas-treaty\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the United Nations High Seas Treaty?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About UN High Seas Treaty:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the <strong>first-ever treaty to protect<\/strong> the world&#8217;s <strong>oceans that lie outside national boundaries.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is also known as the \u2018<strong>Paris Agreement for the Ocean<\/strong>.\u2019<\/li>\n<li>It is a <strong>legally binding treaty<\/strong> to protect marine life in international waters.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>aims to place 30% of the seas into protected areas by 2030 <\/strong>(a pledge made by countries at the UN biodiversity conference in 2022).<\/li>\n<li>It will <strong>provide a legal framework for establishing vast marine protected areas<\/strong> <strong>(MPAs)<\/strong> to protect against the loss of wildlife and <strong>share out the genetic resources of the high seas.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It <strong>also<\/strong> <strong>covers environmental assessments<\/strong> to evaluate the potential damage of commercial activities, such as deep-sea mining.<\/li>\n<li>It will <strong>establish a conference of the parties (CoP)<\/strong> that will <strong>meet periodically<\/strong> and <strong>enable member states to be held to account on issues such as governance and biodiversity.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The treaty <strong>also includes a pledge by signatories to share ocean resources.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The treaty is <strong>built on the legacy of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS),<\/strong> which is the <strong>last international agreement on ocean protection<\/strong>, signed 40 years ago in 1982.
