{"id":3819,"date":"2025-07-26T12:02:49","date_gmt":"2025-07-26T06:32:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=3819"},"modified":"2025-07-26T15:36:26","modified_gmt":"2025-07-26T10:06:26","slug":"macquarie-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/macquarie-island\/","title":{"rendered":"Macquarie Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Macquarie Island Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An earthquake of magnitude 6.0 on the Richter Scale jolted the West of Macquarie Island recently.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>About Macquarie Island<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is located around 1,500 km <\/span><b>southeast of Tasmania, Australia, in the Pacific Ocean.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is located about <\/span><b>halfway between Australia and Antarctica<\/b><b>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The island is about 34 kilometers (21 miles) long and 5 kilometers (3 miles) wide.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>No people live there permanently <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">today.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The island is the <\/span><b>exposed crest of the undersea Macquarie Ridge<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>raised <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to its present position where the <\/span><b>Indo-Australian tectonic plate meets the Pacific plate.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a site of major geoconservation significance, being the o<\/span><b>nly place on earth where<\/b> <b>rocks from the earth\u2019s mantle <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(6 km below the ocean floor) are being actively e<\/span><b>xposed above sea level.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macquarie Ridge is o<\/span><b>ne of only 3 such ridges that impede the Antarctic Circumpolar Circulation.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This results in <\/span><b>distinct differences between the west and east sides of the ridge,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which are used in different ways by different species.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the <\/span><b>island is treeless,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> there are a variety of native vegetation types, including <\/span><b>grasses and many species of moss<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a few <\/span><b>small glacial lakes.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fauna<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It is home to <\/span><b>4 species of penguins and 4 species of albatross,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the island recorded 57 seabird species.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\">Regionally part of Oceania and <b style=\"font-size: inherit;\">politically a part of Tasmania, Australia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, since 1900, it became a Tasmanian State Reserve in 1978 and was inscribed as a <\/span><b style=\"font-size: inherit;\">UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zeebiz.com\/world\/news-earthquake-of-magnitude-6-0-jolts-west-of-macquarie-island-national-center-for-seismology-374664\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ZEEB<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Macquarie Island, located Southeast of Tasmania, is the only piece of land formed entirely of oceanic crust.
