


{"id":39914,"date":"2024-09-12T11:40:52","date_gmt":"2024-09-12T06:10:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=39914"},"modified":"2025-04-24T20:51:10","modified_gmt":"2025-04-24T15:21:10","slug":"international-big-cat-alliance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/international-big-cat-alliance\/","title":{"rendered":"India to set up International Big Cat Alliance"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>What\u2019s in today\u2019s article?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Why in news?<\/li>\n<li>What is International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA)?<\/li>\n<li>Is India Home to All Seven Big Cats?\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why in news?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Union Cabinet approved the establishment of International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) with headquarters in India with a one-time budgetary support of Rs.150 crore for a period of five years from 2023-24 to 2027-28.<\/li>\n<li>Framework of Agreement of IBCA has been drafted largely on the pattern of International Solar Alliance (ISA).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It was <strong>launched<\/strong> by the Indian Prime Minister in Mysuru on April 9, <strong>2023, <\/strong>at an event <strong>commemorating 50 years of Project Tiger<\/strong> in India.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Objective<\/strong>: <strong>Strengthen global cooperation<\/strong> and efforts for <strong>conservation of seven big cat species<\/strong> (tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard, cheetah, jaguar and puma) and their habitats.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Out of the seven big cats<\/strong>, <strong>five<\/strong> \u2014 tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard, and cheetah \u2014 <strong>are found in India<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The alliance <strong>aims to reach<\/strong> out to <strong>97 range countries<\/strong> covering the natural habitats of the seven big cats.<\/li>\n<li>IBCA has been conceived as a <strong>multi-country, multi-agency coalition<\/strong> to strengthen global cooperation and <strong>mobilise financial and technical resources<\/strong> to support the entire ecosystem associated with the conservation of these species and their habitats.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It will serve as an evolving platform for convergence of knowledge and best practices, supporting existing specific inter-governmental platforms, while also <strong>providing direct support to recovery efforts <\/strong>in potential range habitats.<\/li>\n<li>IBCA would have a multi-pronged approach in broad-basing and establishing linkages in several areas and help in <strong>knowledge-sharing, capacity-building<\/strong>, networking, advocacy, <strong>finance, and resource support<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>IBCA governance<\/strong> consists of an <strong>assembly of members<\/strong>, a <strong>standing committee<\/strong>, and a <strong>secretariat<\/strong> with <strong>its headquarters in India.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>IBCA has secured the Government of India&#8217;s initial support of Rs. 150 crore for five years (2023-24 to 2027-28).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Is India Home to All Seven Big Cats?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Out of 7 big cats, India is home to 5: Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard and Cheetah<\/li>\n<li>Royal Bengal Tiger\n<ul>\n<li>As per the latest Tiger Census conducted in 2018-19, tiger population in India has increased to 2967.<\/li>\n<li>India now accounts for about 70% of the world\u2019s tiger population.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Asiatic Lion\n<ul>\n<li>Gir National Park in Gujarat is the last abode for the surviving population of the Asiatic Lions in the world.<\/li>\n<li>Since the late 1960s, population of Asiatic Lions has increased from less than 200 to 674 (Census 2020).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Leopard\n<ul>\n<li>It is estimated that 12,000-14,000 leopards occur in India, and the population is the most genetically diverse\/outbred out of all the subspecies in Asia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Snow Leopard\n<ul>\n<li>Snow leopard is native to the mountain ranges of Central and South Asia.<\/li>\n<li>In India, their geographical range encompasses a large part of the western Himalayas including the territories of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh in the eastern Himalayas.<\/li>\n<li>In 2021, there are about 7,500 snow leopards left in the world, out of which 500 are in India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Cheetah\n<ul>\n<li>Cheetah had become extinct in India since 1952.<\/li>\n<li>In September 2022, Cheetahs have been reintroduced in the wild in India as 8 Cheetahs were imported from Namibia.<\/li>\n<li>They were released into the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh in November, 2022.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What is the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)?<\/h3>\n<p>The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is a membership union of governments and civil society organizations.
