There is a strong chance of heatwaves lasting for 10 to 20 days during this time.<\/p>\n<h2>What is India Meteorological Department (IMD)?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>About<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The IMD is a government agency that is responsible for weather forecasting, seismology, and meteorological observations.<\/li>\n<li>It was established in 1875 and is headquartered in New Delhi.<\/li>\n<li>The IMD has hundreds of observation stations across India and is the country&#8217;s National Meteorological Service.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Madate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The IMD&#8217;s mandate includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Observations: Taking meteorological observations<\/li>\n<li>Forecasting: Providing current and forecast information for weather-dependent activities<\/li>\n<li>Warnings: Giving warnings against severe weather phenomena<\/li>\n<li>Statistics: Providing met-related statistics<\/li>\n<li>Research: Engaging in research<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Nodal Ministry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ministry of Earth Sciences of the Indian Government<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What are Heat waves?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A Heat Wave is a period of abnormally high temperatures, more than the normal maximum temperature.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In India, Heat waves typically occur from March to June, and in some rare cases, even extend till July.<\/li>\n<li>On an average, five-six heat wave events occur every year over the northern parts of the country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Heat wave is considered if maximum temperature of a station reaches at least 40\u00b0C or more for Plains and at least 30\u00b0C or more for Hilly regions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Based on Departure from Normal Heat Wave<\/strong>: Departure from normal is 4.50\u00b0C to 6.40\u00b0C; Severe Heat Wave: Departure from normal is &gt;6.40degree C<\/li>\n<li><strong>Based on Actual Maximum Temperature Heat Wave<\/strong>: When actual maximum temperature \u2265 45\u00b0C; Severe Heat Wave: When actual maximum temperature \u226547<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Rapid rises in heat gain compromises the body\u2019s ability to regulate temperature.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It can result in a cascade of illnesses, including heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and hyperthermia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Prediction by IMD<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Extreme heat during the April to June period<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>India is set to experience extreme heat during the April to June period, with the central and western peninsular parts expected to be worst-hit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>10 to 20 days of heatwave are expected<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At least 10 to 20 days of heatwave are expected in different parts of the country against a normal of four to eight days.<\/li>\n<li>Gujarat, central Maharashtra, north Karnataka, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, north Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh are likely in for the worst of heatwaves during the month of April.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Performance of the pre-monsoon rainfall<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This month, performance of the pre-monsoon rainfall shall be below average, mainly over coastal India, eastern and south peninsular India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>On El Nino conditions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The El Nino conditions \u2014 the abnormal warming of the sea surface recorded along the equatorial Pacific Ocean \u2014 had commenced last June.\n<ul>\n<li>El Nino conditions are known to suppress rainfall over India and increase temperatures, globally.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>After peaking in December last year, El Nino conditions had begun to ease.<\/li>\n<li>But warm conditions continued to prevail and significantly drove up the global temperatures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Conditions during February and March<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>During February and March, the southern peninsular India had experienced hotter than normal weather conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Heatwave conditions were reported from Maharashtra, northern Karnataka, Saurashtra-Kutch and parts of Rajasthan during late March.\n<ul>\n<li>The maximum temperatures recorded during the past week reached 42.6 degrees Celsius in pockets of Akola in Maharashtra and Phalodi in Rajasthan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q.1.
