


{"id":40647,"date":"2024-04-24T08:55:26","date_gmt":"2024-04-24T03:25:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=40647"},"modified":"2025-10-11T11:01:46","modified_gmt":"2025-10-11T05:31:46","slug":"state-of-the-climate-in-asia-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/state-of-the-climate-in-asia-report\/","title":{"rendered":"State of the Climate in Asia 2023 Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>What\u2019s in today\u2019s article?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Why in News?<\/li>\n<li>Key Highlights of the \u2018State of the Climate in Asia 2023\u2019 Report:<\/li>\n<li>What the \u2018State of the Climate in Asia 2023\u2019 Report Highlighted About India?<\/li>\n<li>What Needs to be Done?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why in News?<\/h2>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/world-meteorological-organization\/\" target=\"_blank\">World Meteorological Organisation<\/a>\u2019s (WMO) report (\u2018State of the Climate in Asia 2023\u2019), Asia faced the most disasters in the world in 2023.<\/p>\n<h2>Key Highlights of the \u2018State of the Climate in Asia 2023\u2019 Report<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"image image_resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vajiram-prod.s3.ap-south-1.amazonaws.com\/State_of_the_Climate_in_Asia_2023_Report_4df30f2eb3.webp\" alt=\"State of the Climate in Asia 2023 Report\" \/><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Number of extreme weather events in Asia:<\/strong> 79 events associated with extreme weather, climate and water-related hazards in 2023 affected over 9 million people in the region, directly killing over 2,000 people.\n<ul>\n<li>Compared to 2022, the reported disaster events in the region were lesser by only two in 2023.<\/li>\n<li>The number of people impacted in 2023 was lower as the 2022 Pakistan floods had alone affected over 30 million people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>The mean temperature over Asia:<\/strong> In 2023, it was 0.91\u00b0C above the 1991\u20132020 reference period, the second highest on record.\n<ul>\n<li>Many parts of the region experienced extreme heat events in 2023. <strong>Japan <\/strong>experienced its hottest summer on record.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Glaciers in High-Mountain Asia<\/strong>: They have lost significant mass over the past 40 years, at an accelerating rate.\n<ul>\n<li>In 2023, record-breaking high temperatures and drier conditions in the <strong>Eastern Himalayas and the Tien Shan<\/strong> (mountain range) exacerbated mass loss.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>The ocean around Asia:<\/strong> Has shown <strong>an overall warming trend<\/strong> since the time series began in 1982.\n<ul>\n<li>In 2023, sea-surface temperature anomalies in the north-west Pacific Ocean were the highest on record.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>South-west China suffered from a drought: <\/strong>This was because of thebelow-normal precipitation levels nearly every month of 2023.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Floods and storms accounted for 80% of hydrometeorological hazards:<\/strong> For instance, <strong>Yemen <\/strong>suffered heavy rainfall and resulting in widespread floods.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What the \u2018State of the Climate in Asia 2023\u2019 Report Highlighted About India?<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"image image_resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vajiram-prod.s3.ap-south-1.amazonaws.com\/State_of_the_Climate_in_Asia_2023_Report_india_highlights_55d022aaa3.webp\" alt=\"State of the Climate in Asia 2023\u2019 Report india highlights\" \/><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>In India<\/strong>, the impacts of extreme weather events were felt strongly as the country experienced <strong>severe heat waves, rainfall-induced floods, glacial lake outbursts and <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/tropical-cyclone-formation-and-characteristics\/\" target=\"_blank\">tropical cyclones<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Severe heat waves <\/strong>(in April and June 2023) resulted in about 110 deaths due to heatstroke.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>For example<\/strong>, the Ballia and Deoria districts in Uttar Pradesh saw the deaths of over 100 people, many of them senior citizens with co-morbidities.<\/li>\n<li>Temperatures were in the 42-43 degrees Celsius range in the region during these heat-related deaths.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flood events<\/strong> occurred in India during August 2023 and Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand recorded 25 deaths as well as extensive damage to infrastructure and agriculture.\n<ul>\n<li>The Indian government declared <strong>a state of emergency in the worst-affected areas<\/strong>, initiating rescue and relief operations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Indian sub-continent experienced six tropical cyclones in 2023<\/strong> which formed in the North Indian Ocean. The cyclone activity was slightly above the average of 5.4 cyclones.\n<ul>\n<li>Four out of the six cyclones &#8211; <strong>Mocha, Hamoon, Midhili and Michaung<\/strong> &#8211; formed over the Bay of Bengal and two &#8211; <strong>Biparjoy and Tej<\/strong> &#8211; formed over the Arabian Sea.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>A significant glacial lake outburst flood<\/strong> in South Lhonak Lake in Sikkim on October 4 last year, breached the Chungthang dam downstream on the Teesta River and killed over 40 people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What Needs to be Done?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Disaster risk reduction in the Asia region is facing an alarming gap<\/strong> in climate projections and tailored products that are needed to inform long-term interventions such as adaptation to and mitigation of climate change and its impacts.<\/li>\n<li>Currently, <strong>less than 50% of WMO Members are providing tailored products<\/strong>, indicating a significant inadequacy in view of the region\u2019s high vulnerability to climate-related disasters.<\/li>\n<li><strong>By 2030<\/strong>, annual losses in Asia (due to extreme weather events) are expected to be over USD 160 billion, which is close to 0.6% of the region\u2019s GDP, up from 0.1% in the 1970s.<\/li>\n<li>Therefore, there is <strong>an urgent need to advance these efforts and provide more tailored support products <\/strong>to address long-term strategies as well as medium and short-term activities and interventions to effectively mitigate disaster risks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Q.1.
