{"id":40737,"date":"2025-10-27T10:47:21","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T05:17:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=40737"},"modified":"2025-10-30T15:28:14","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T09:58:14","slug":"missile-assisted-torpedo-release-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/missile-assisted-torpedo-release-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Missile-Assisted Torpedo Release System"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>What\u2019s in today\u2019s article?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Why in News?<\/li>\n<li>What is Supersonic Missile Assisted Torpedoes (SMART)?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why in News?<\/h2>\n<p>The Defence Research and Development Organisation (<a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/defence-research-and-development-organisation-drdo\/\" target=\"_blank\">DRDO<\/a>) has successfully tested a long-range Supersonic Missile Assisted Torpedo (SMART).\u00a0It is aimed at boosting the Navy\u2019s anti-submarine warfare capabilities.<\/p>\n<h2>What is Supersonic Missile Assisted Torpedoes (SMART)?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Background: Torpedo<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Torpedoes, self-propelled weapons that travel underwater to hit a target, are limited by their range.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>In the mid-2010s, DRDO undertook a project to build capacity to launch torpedoes assisted by missiles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>About SMART<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-the-smart-program\/\" target=\"_blank\">SMART<\/a> system comprises a mechanism by which the torpedo is launched from a supersonic missile system with modifications.<\/li>\n<li>These modifications would take the torpedo to a far longer range than its own.<\/li>\n<li>For example, a torpedo with a range of a few kilometres can be sent a distance to the tune of 1000 km by the missile system from where the torpedo is launched.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Institutions involved<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>A number of DRDO laboratories have developed the technologies required for SMART. These include:\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) and Research Centre Imarat (RCI), both in Hyderabad;\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE) in Agra; and\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Naval Science and Technology Laboratory (NSTL) Visakhapatnam.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Features<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The system can be launched from both coasts and warships.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>canister-based missile system<\/strong> comprises several advanced subsystems including two-stage solid propulsion and precision inertial navigation.\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>Canister enables smooth and safe launch of article. Also, canister serves the purpose of transportation, storage and launching of missiles.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>These Canisters are filled with inert gases to provide protection from outside environment during Storage and transportation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It carries an advanced lightweight torpedo missile as a payload along with a parachute-based release mechanism.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Significance<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>This missile-based mechanism to launch lightweight torpedoes can target submarines hundreds of kilometres away \u2014 far beyond the conventional range of lightweight torpedoes.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It will be particularly employed in the absence of other assets for immediate action when an enemy submarine is detected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q.1.
