The recognition of Palestine is expected to take place on May 28.<\/p>\n<p>This step may encourage other EU countries to do the same. This, in turn, could also lead to more action at the United Nations, further isolating Israel.<\/p>\n<h2>Israel- Palestine: Synopsis of the Conflict<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Early Phase<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>In the 19th century the land of <strong>Palestine was inhabited by a multicultural population<\/strong> (approx. 86% Muslim, 10% Christian, and 4% Jewish) \u2013 living in peace.<\/li>\n<li><strong>In the late 1800s<\/strong>, a group in Europe decided to colonize this land. <strong>Known as Zionists<\/strong>, their goal was to create a Jewish homeland.\n<ul>\n<li>They considered locations in Africa and the Americas, before settling on Palestine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Hitler\u2019s rise to power, led to increased Jewish immigration to Palestine. With the steady influx of Jews, the conflict in Palestine started to grow.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>UN Partition Plan<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>In 1947 the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/the-united-nations-un\/\" target=\"_blank\">United Nations<\/a><strong> decided to intervene<\/strong>. However, it <strong>did not choose the principle of \u201cself-determination of peoples<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Under considerable Zionist pressure, the UN recommended giving away 55% of Palestine to a Jewish state.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>1947-1949 War\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Fighting began almost as soon as the Resolution of November 1947 was approved.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>On May 14, 1948, one day before the\u00a0British Mandate (Palestine was a British colony) expired,\u00a0Britain declared\u00a0the establishment of a\u00a0Jewish State\u00a0in\u00a0Eretz-Israel, to be known as the\u00a0State of Israel.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>This\u00a0sparked a full-scale war (1948 Arab\u2013Israeli War).<\/li>\n<li>By the end of the war, Israel had conquered 78 percent of Palestine; and a new map was drawn up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Oslo peace process<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>In the 1993 a breakthrough agreement was negotiated between Israeli and Palestinian leaders in Oslo, Norway.<\/li>\n<li>Under this process, the Israeli government and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) agreed on a <strong>plan to implement a two-state solution<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The issue of statehood to Palestine<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Control of the Palestinian territories remains divided<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The 1948 UN decision created Israel envisaged a neighboring Palestinian state.<\/li>\n<li>However, even today, the control of the Palestinian territories remains divided and bids for UN membership have been denied.\n<ul>\n<li>The Palestine Authority currently has observer status at UN.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Current status<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Around 144 out of 193 member-states of the United Nations recognise Palestine as a state, including most of the global south, Russia, China and India.<\/li>\n<li>However, so far, only a handful of the 27 EU members have done so, mostly former Communist countries as well as Sweden and Cyprus.<\/li>\n<li>Britain, Australia and EU member Malta have indicated in recent months that they could soon follow suit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Increasing support in favour of Palestine<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Recently, in May 2024, 143 of 193 countries in the United Nations (U.N.) General Assembly voted for full membership to the U.N. for the State of Palestine.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/international-criminal-court-icc-and-its-functions\/\" target=\"_blank\">International Criminal Court (ICC)<\/a> prosecutor has sought arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stand of Western Countries<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The United States, Britain and other Western countries have backed the idea of an independent Palestinian state existing alongside Israel.<\/li>\n<li>However, they insist Palestinian statehood should come as part of a negotiated settlement.\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>There have been no substantive negotiations since 2009.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Palestinian statehood and stand of India<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>India and Palestine have had a relationship since 1974, when India became the first non-Arab state to recognize the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO).<\/li>\n<li>In 1988, India was one of the first countries to recognize the Palestinian State.<\/li>\n<li>In 1996, India opened its Representative Office to Palestine in Gaza City which was shifted to Ramallah in 2003.<\/li>\n<li>India has advocated the resumption of direct negotiations towards establishing a sovereign, independent and viable State of Palestine living within secure and recognized borders, side by side at peace with Israel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Ireland, Spain, Norway to formally recognise Palestine<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Recognition to State of Palestine\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Ireland, Spain and Norway announced that they would recognise a Palestinian state on May 28.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Significance<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Although the EU countries and Norway aren&#8217;t recognizing a current Palestinian state, their support symbolizes a boost for the Palestinians&#8217; global image.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>This increases pressure on Israel to start peace talks.<\/li>\n<li>Also, this would mark a significant accomplishment for the Palestinians, who believe it confers international legitimacy on their struggle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Israel\u2019s response<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Israel reacted rapidly by recalling its ambassadors to Ireland, Norway and Spain.<\/li>\n<li>The Israeli government slams talk of Palestinian independence as a reward for the Hamas October 7 attack on southern Israel.\n<ul>\n<li>This attack killed 1,200 people and led to the abduction of over 250 others.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It rejects any move to legitimize the Palestinians internationally.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Q.1.
