{"id":4125,"date":"2023-03-11T03:42:37","date_gmt":"2023-03-10T22:12:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=4125"},"modified":"2025-03-26T21:46:48","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T16:16:48","slug":"what-is-cyclone-freddy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-cyclone-freddy\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Cyclone Freddy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Cyclone Freddy:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Origin<\/strong>: It originated off the <strong>northern coast of Australia<\/strong> and became a named storm on February 6, 2022.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>crossed the entire South Indian Ocean<\/strong> and <strong>traveled more than 8,000 kilometers<\/strong>, affecting Mauritius and La R\u00e9union, before making <strong>landfalls in Madagascar<\/strong> two weeks later <strong>and<\/strong> <strong>then Mozambique.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Freddy was the <strong>first tropical cyclone in the Southern Hemisphere<\/strong> <strong>to undergo six separate rounds of rapid intensification.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It also <strong>holds the record for all-time accumulated cyclone energy<\/strong> (ACE) (storm strength during its lifetime) <strong>for the Southern Hemisphere<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Freddy is <strong>fuelled by the energy provided by the warm ocean surface<\/strong>, consistently sourcing heat and moisture throughout its lifetime.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What is a Tropical Cyclone?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>rapidly rotating storm originating over warm tropical oceans<\/strong> from where it draws the energy to develop.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It has a <strong>low-pressure center<\/strong> and <strong>clouds spiraling towards the eyewall<\/strong> surrounding the &#8220;eye&#8221;, the central part of the system where the weather is normally calm and free of clouds.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Its <strong>diameter is typically around 200 to 500 km<\/strong> but can reach 1000 km.<\/li>\n<li>The winds <strong>blow counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere<\/strong> and <strong>clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>A tropical cyclone <strong>brings very violent winds<\/strong>, torrential rain, <strong>high waves<\/strong>, and, in some cases, very destructive storm surges and coastal flooding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1)\u00a0How are cyclones known in different regions?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Cyclones are given many names in different regions of the world \u2013 They are known as typhoons in the China Sea and Pacific Ocean;
