{"id":4158,"date":"2023-01-24T07:54:43","date_gmt":"2023-01-24T02:24:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=4158"},"modified":"2025-03-26T22:11:52","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T16:41:52","slug":"what-is-the-safar-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-the-safar-system\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the SAFAR system?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About SAFAR system:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It stands for <strong>System of Air Quality Forecasting and Research.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>SAFAR is an <strong>air quality monitoring system.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>introduced by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES)<\/strong> to provide l<strong>ocation specific information on air quality in near real time <\/strong>and its<strong> forecast upto 3 days in India.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0 is <strong>developed by Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune<\/strong>, along with India Meteorological Department (IMD) and National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Objective<\/strong>:\u00a0 <strong>To increase awareness among the general public regarding the air quality<\/strong> changes in their city well in advance so that appropriate mitigation measures and systematic action can be taken up for betterment of air quality and related health issues.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>World Meteorological Organization has recognised SAFAR as a prototype activity<\/strong> on the basis of the high quality control and standards maintained in its implementation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>How is the Air Quality Index (AQI) calculated in India?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>AQI is calculated <strong>based on the average concentration of a particular pollutant measured over a standard time interval<\/strong> (24 hours for most pollutants, 8 hours for carbon monoxide and ozone).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eight individual pollutants<\/strong> are monitored for the calculation of AQI in India.
