Surat district recently.<\/p>\n<h2>About Tapi River<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Tapi River, also known as the\u00a0<strong>Tapti River<\/strong>, is one of the major rivers in\u00a0<strong>central India.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is considered\u00a0<strong>one of\u00a0<\/strong>the only\u00a0<strong>three major rivers<\/strong>\u00a0in India that\u00a0<strong>flow from east to west,\u00a0<\/strong>the<strong>\u00a0other two being<\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>Narmada and the Mahi\u00a0<\/strong>rivers.<\/li>\n<li>It covers a\u00a0<strong>large area in\u00a0<\/strong>the State of\u00a0<strong>Maharashtra besides\u00a0<\/strong>areas in the states of\u00a0<strong>Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Course:\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Origin<\/strong>: It rises in the\u00a0<strong>Gawilgarh Hills<\/strong>\u00a0of the\u00a0<strong>central Deccan plateau<\/strong>\u00a0in south-central\u00a0<strong>Madhya Prades<\/strong>h state.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It<strong>\u00a0flows westward between\u00a0<\/strong>two spurs of the\u00a0<strong>Satpura Range<\/strong>, across the Jalgaon plateau region in Maharashtra state, and through the\u00a0<strong>plain of Surat in Gujarat\u00a0<\/strong>state\u00a0<strong>to the Gulf of Khambhat\u00a0<\/strong>(an\u00a0<strong>inlet of the Arabian Sea<\/strong>).\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It has a total length of about\u00a0<strong>700 km.\u00a0<\/strong>For the\u00a0<strong>last 51 km it is tidal\u00a0<\/strong>but is navigable by small vessels.<\/li>\n<li>It drains an area of 65,145 sq.km., which is nearly two percent of the total area of India.\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>basin\u00a0<\/strong>lies in the states of\u00a0<strong>Maharashtra (51,504 sq.km.),Madhya Pradesh<\/strong>\u00a0(9,804 sq.km.) and\u00a0<strong>Gujarat\u00a0<\/strong>(3,837 sq.km.).<\/li>\n<li>Situated in the Deccan plateau, the basin is<strong>\u00a0bounded by<\/strong>\u00a0the<strong>\u00a0Satpura range\u00a0<\/strong>on the north, by the\u00a0<strong>Mahadev hills<\/strong>\u00a0on the east, by the<strong>\u00a0Ajanta Range<\/strong>\u00a0and the<strong>\u00a0Satmala hills<\/strong>\u00a0on the south, and by the\u00a0<strong>Arabian Sea<\/strong>\u00a0on the west.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>major part of the basin\u00a0<\/strong>is covered with\u00a0<strong>agriculture,\u00a0<\/strong>accounting for 66.19% of the total area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The Tapti\u00a0<strong>flows roughly parallel to<\/strong>\u00a0the longer\u00a0<strong>Narmada River\u00a0<\/strong>to the north, from which it is\u00a0<strong>separated by<\/strong>\u00a0the main part of the\u00a0<strong>Satpura Range.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The<strong>\u00a0two river valleys<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>intervening range form<\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>natural barrier between northern and peninsular India.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The Tapti River\u2019s three\u00a0<strong>major tributarie<\/strong>s\u2014the\u00a0<strong>Purna, Girna, and Panjhra<\/strong>\u2014flow from the south in Maharashtra state.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ukai Dam:<\/strong>\u00a0A major hydroelectric project
