


{"id":42185,"date":"2025-04-19T17:51:29","date_gmt":"2025-04-19T12:21:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=42185"},"modified":"2025-05-28T12:20:40","modified_gmt":"2025-05-28T06:50:40","slug":"surface-mount-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/surface-mount-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"Surface Mount Technology (SMT)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Surface Mount Technology Latest News<\/h2>\n<p>Inaugurating VVDN Technologies&#8217; SMT (Surface Mount Technology) Line at Manesar recently, the Minister of Electronics and Information Technology noted that electronics manufacturing in India has risen 5-fold in the last decade, topping Rs 11 lakh crore.<\/p>\n<h2>About Surface Mount Technology<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It refers to a\u00a0<strong>manufacturing technique<\/strong>\u00a0where\u00a0<strong>electronic components are directly applied to the surface of a printed circuit board (PCB).\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>SMT, developed in the 1960s and 1970s,\u00a0<strong>replaced conventional through-hole technology (THT),\u00a0<\/strong>producing more compact, economical, and efficient electronic devices.<\/li>\n<li>This method\u00a0<strong>enables automated production<\/strong>\u00a0to conduct a more extensive assembly, resulting in the creation of a fully functional circuit board.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Any electronic element installed in this manner\u00a0<\/strong>is identified as a s<strong>urface-mounted component (SMD).\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In opposition to conventional manufacturing techniques,\u00a0<strong>SMT removes the necessity for elements to be placed through apertures;<\/strong>\u00a0rather,\u00a0<strong>elements are attached\u00a0<\/strong>to the board\u00a0<strong>via the process of soldering.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The two main soldering techniques are\u00a0<strong>reflow soldering and wave soldering.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Assembling PCBs using SMT involves various\u00a0<strong>steps like solder paste application,component placement, reflow soldering, and cleaning.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>SMT is used in many industries like consumer electronics, medical, and aerospace industries.<\/li>\n<li><strong>THT vs. SMT:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>As compared to THT, SMT has\u00a0<strong>cheaper production costs<\/strong>, i<strong>ncreased component density,\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>superior electrical performance<\/strong>. But the\u00a0<strong>initial cost is high,<\/strong>\u00a0and it is\u00a0<strong>difficult to repair.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>process\u00a0<\/strong>for SMT production setup\u00a0<strong>is faster<\/strong>\u00a0when compared to THT. This is because components are mounted using solder paste instead of drilled holes. It saves time and labor-intensive work.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>SMT supports microelectronics\u00a0<\/strong>by allowing more components to be placed closer together on the board. This<strong>\u00a0leads to designs that are more lightweight and compact.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Simplicity<\/strong>:\u00a0<strong>In THT, lead wires pass through the holes<\/strong>\u00a0to connect components.
