an attempt by the world&#8217;s biggest edible oil importer to support local oilseed farmers.<\/li>\n<li>This comes days after the Centre allowed soybean (the leading source of edible oils) procurement at Minimum Support Price (MSP) in 4 states &#8211; Maharashtra, MP, Karnataka and Telangana.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Edible Oil Scenario in India:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>What are edible oils?<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Edible oils are mainly vegetable oils <\/strong>that are subjected to several <strong>refining processes <\/strong>(such as neutralisation, bleaching and deodorisation) to remove undesirable constituents.<\/li>\n<li>Regarding consumption as a food product, <strong>vegetable oils are considered the healthier alternative<\/strong> as they contain more unsaturated fatty acids than animal fats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Overall scenario of edible oil availability in India:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vajiram-prod.s3.ap-south-1.amazonaws.com\/Edible_oil_availability_61260c8979.webp\" alt=\"Edible oil availability\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>India contributes about 5-6% of the world oilseeds production<\/strong>, accounting for the estimated production of 41.35 million tons (MT) of nine cultivated oilseeds during the year 2022-23 (November-October).\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Export <\/strong>of oil meals, oilseeds and minor oils was about 3.46 MT in the financial year 2022-23 valued at Rs 14,609 crores.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Area and production of oil seeds in India:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vajiram-prod.s3.ap-south-1.amazonaws.com\/Area_and_production_of_oil_seeds_in_India_8c1db59bd8.webp\" alt=\"Area and production of oil seeds in India\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Regional variation in edible oil production:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vajiram-prod.s3.ap-south-1.amazonaws.com\/Regional_variation_in_edible_oil_production_8f8a198ac3.webp\" alt=\"Regional variation in edible oil production\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Report on \u2018Pathways and Strategies for Accelerating Growth in Edible Oils Towards Atmanirbharta\u2019:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>About the report: <\/strong>It was released by the <strong>NITI Aayog <\/strong>to comprehensively explore the current state of the country\u2019s edible oil sector and its future potential.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Highlights of the report:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The report highlights that over the past decades, <strong>per capita consumption of edible<\/strong> oil in the country has seen a <strong>dramatic rise<\/strong>, reaching 19.7 kg\/year.<\/li>\n<li>This surge in demand has significantly <strong>outpaced domestic production<\/strong>, leading to a <strong>heavy reliance on imports<\/strong> to meet both domestic and industrial needs.<\/li>\n<li>In 2022-23, <strong>India imported 16.5 MT <\/strong>of edible oils, with domestic production fulfilling only 40-45% of the country\u2019s requirements.<\/li>\n<li>This situation presents a <strong>substantial challenge<\/strong> to the country\u2019s goal of achieving <strong>self-sufficiency <\/strong>in edible oils.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Roadmap to address existing challenges:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The report focuses on bridging the demand-supply gap and developing new approaches to attain self-sufficiency.<\/li>\n<li>Under a Business-As-Usual (BAU) scenario, the <strong>national supply<\/strong> of edible oil is projected to increase to <strong>16 MT by 2030 and 26.7 MT by 2047<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strategic interventions to achieve self-sufficiency in this sector:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Crop retention and diversification.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Horizontal expansion:<\/strong> This strategy seeks to bring more land under cultivation for specific oilseeds.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vertical expansion: <\/strong>It focuses on enhancing the yield of existing oilseed cultivation. This can be achieved through improved farming practices, better-quality seeds, and advanced production technologies.<\/li>\n<li>Developing a <strong>dynamic trade policy<\/strong> for balanced growth.<\/li>\n<li>Broadening the scope of the <strong>National Mission on Edible Oils<\/strong>, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q.1. What is the National Mission for Edible Oils &#8211; Oil Palm (NMEO-OP)?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Government of India launched the NMEO-OP in 2021 to escalate oil palm cultivation and elevate Crude Palm Oil production to 11.20 lakh tonnes by 2025-26.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Q.2. How is the insufficiency in edible oil negatively impacting India?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>India is presently a net importer of edible oil, with 57% of the total edible oil being imported from various countries.
