{"id":4330,"date":"2026-05-03T14:14:28","date_gmt":"2026-05-03T08:44:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=4330"},"modified":"2026-05-04T18:08:34","modified_gmt":"2026-05-04T12:38:34","slug":"atomic-energy-regulatory-board","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/atomic-energy-regulatory-board\/","title":{"rendered":"Atomic Energy Regulatory Board"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Atomic Energy Regulatory Board Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) has issued permission for &#8220;major equipment erection&#8221; at Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) Units 5 and 6.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Atomic Energy Regulatory Board<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is India\u2019s premier <\/span><b>regulatory authority<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><b>nuclear and radiation safety.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Background:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The AERB was <\/span><b>constituted on November 15, 1983<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by the President of India by exercising the powers <\/span><b>conferred by the Atomic Energy Act, 1962<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to carry out certain regulatory and safety functions under the Act.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The regulatory authority of AERB is derived from the rules and notifications promulgated under the <\/span><b>Atomic Energy Act and the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/environment-protection-act-1986\/\" target=\"_blank\">Environment (Protection) Act, 1986<\/a>.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Objective:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> To ensure the use of ionizing radiation and nuclear energy in India does not cause undue risk to the health of people and the environment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Headquarters:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Mumbai.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Composition<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>comprises six members<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of which <\/span><b>two are whole time members<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including the chairman.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other whole-time member is the executive director of the AERB Secretariat who is an ex-officio member of the Board.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other four members are <\/span><b>eminent experts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from various disciplines relevant to the mandate of the board.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Board shall be responsible to the <\/span><b>Atomic Energy Commission.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Functions of AERB<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Develop safety policies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in nuclear, radiation and industrial safety areas for facilities under its purview.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Develop Safety Codes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Guides and Standards for siting, design, construction, commissioning, operation and decommissioning of different types of nuclear and radiation facilities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Grant consents for siting, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">construction, commissioning, operation and decommissioning, after an appropriate safety review and assessment, for establishment of nuclear and radiation facilities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AERB license is a <\/span><b>mandatory certification<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for entities involved in the <\/span><b>use of ionizing radiation and nuclear energy in India.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It shall have authority to administer the <\/span><b>provisions of the Factories Act, 1948<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the industrial safety for the units of Department of Atomic Energy (DAE).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><\/b><strong>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/aerb-issues-permission-for-major-equipment-erection-at-kudankulam-nuclear-power-project\/article70929714.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Atomic Energy Regulatory Board ensures nuclear and radiation safety in India.
