is Savitribai Phule?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Who Is Savitribai Phule?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>A pioneer who challenged oppressive social norms in her quest for women\u2019s education, equality and justice<strong>, Savitribai Phule is formally recognised as India\u2019s first woman teacher.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>A Dalit woman from the Mali community, Savitribai was born on January 3, 1831, at Naigaon in Satara District.<\/li>\n<li>In 1840, at the tender age of 9, she was married to Jyotirao (also known as Mahatma Jyotiba Phule one of the leading social reformers and anti-caste activists of India) is said to have educated her at home and later on admitted her to a teacher\u2019s training institution in Pune.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Establishment of India\u2019s First Girls\u2019 School<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>At a time when education was limited mostly to the upper-class, affluent men, and women were not deemed eligible for going to school, the Phules <strong>established a girls\u2019 school in Bhidewada, Pune, in 1948.<\/strong> This was the <strong>first girls\u2019 school in India.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Phule\u2019s role as a social reformer<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>In 1852, she <strong>established a women\u2019s rights advocacy organisation, Mahila Seva Mandal.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In 1860, the Phule\u2019s organised a <strong>barber\u2019s strike against shaving the hair of widowed women.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Along with Jyotirao, Savitribai started <strong>the Balhatya Pratibandhak Griha<\/strong> (\u2018Home for the Prevention of Infanticide\u2019) for pregnant widows facing discrimination.<\/li>\n<li>Savitribai Phule also advocated inter-caste marriages, widow remarriage, and eradication of child marriage, sati and dowry systems, among other social issues.<\/li>\n<li>In 1873, the Phules <strong>set up the Satyashodhak Samaj<\/strong> (\u2018Truth-seekers\u2019 society\u2019), a platform open to all, irrespective of their caste, religion or class hierarchies, with the sole aim of bringing social equity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Literary works<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Savitribai Phule published her first collection of poems, called <strong>Kavya Phule<\/strong> (\u2018Poetry\u2019s Blossoms\u2019), at the age of 23 in 1854.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>She published <strong>Bavan Kashi Subodh Ratnakar<\/strong> (\u2018The Ocean of Pure Gems\u2019), in
