{"id":4421,"date":"2023-01-04T07:37:58","date_gmt":"2023-01-04T02:07:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=4421"},"modified":"2025-03-27T00:16:08","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T18:46:08","slug":"what-is-african-animal-trypanosomosis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-african-animal-trypanosomosis\/","title":{"rendered":"What is African Animal Trypanosomosis?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Why in news?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Ethiopia\u2019s National Institute for Control and Eradication of Tsetse and Trypanosomosis (NICETT), through this atlas initiative, aims to establish a reference for the distribution of tsetse flies and African animal trypanosomosis (AAT) in western Ethiopia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is AAT?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is caused by the parasitic <strong>protozoa trypanosomes<\/strong>, which are <strong>transmitted <\/strong>by the bite of <strong>tsetse flies<\/strong>, an African blood-sucking fly.<\/li>\n<li>It is a major livestock disease constraining sub-Saharan Africa\u2019s agricultural production.<\/li>\n<li>There is no vaccine, and existing drugs are becoming less effective because of the development of resistance in parasites.<\/li>\n<li>A human form of the disease also exists, known as human African trypanosomosis or sleeping sickness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p><strong>On-going Projects related to AAT<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The COMBAT project<\/strong> (Controlling and progressively Minimising the Burden of Animal Trypanosomosis)<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>European Commission financed<\/strong> a four-year research and innovation project in Africa.<\/li>\n<li>The project spans from August 2021-August 2025 and houses African countries, including South Africa, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Uganda, Senegal, Sudan, Chad, Zambia and Zimbabwe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1) What are Protozoa?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Protozoa are unicellular, eukaryotic, heterotrophic organisms and they either free-living or parasites.
