{"id":4461,"date":"2025-12-15T11:52:54","date_gmt":"2025-12-15T06:22:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=4461"},"modified":"2025-12-15T16:04:19","modified_gmt":"2025-12-15T10:34:19","slug":"what-is-dieback-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-dieback-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Dieback Disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Dieback Disease Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The withering of thousands of neem trees over some years had prompted the Mulugu-based Forest College &amp; Research Institute (FCRI), to launch a comprehensive scientific probe into the devastating &#8220;dieback disease.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Dieback Disease<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a<\/span><b> fungal disease <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which <\/span><b>kills a wide variety of plants.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is responsible for causing<\/span><b> wilting and browning of leaves from the tip of the branch, stem canker, and fruit rot.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>first reported in the country<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the <\/span><b>1990s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">near Dehradun in <\/span><b>Uttarakhand<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dieback fungus belongs to the genus Phytophthora<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mode of spread:\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fungus is spread through the <\/span><b>movement of soil and mud<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially by vehicles and footwear.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also <\/span><b>moves in free water and via root-to root contact between plants.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fungus lives in susceptible plant tissue and soil, and <\/span><b>migrates and reproduces in warm, moist conditions.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Infected roots cannot provide the water and nutrients needed to maintain life,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>plants die from dehydration.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It causes almost <\/span><b>100% loss of fruit production<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in severely infected trees.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where the disease occurs, the native vegetation can become devastated, and the delicate fabric of ecosystems seriously impaired; certain species can disappear from the area.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>appearance of symptoms <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">starts with the <\/span><b>onset of the rainy season<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and becomes progressively <\/span><b>severe in the later part of the rainy season<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and early winter.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dieback is <\/span><b>not easy to detect, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as infected plants often appear to be dying from drought.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is <\/span><b>no known cure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the disease.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deccanchronicle.com\/amp\/southern-states\/telangana\/foresters-try-out-cure-for-neem-killer-disease-1923931\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">DC<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dieback Disease is a fungal disease which kills a wide variety of plants.
