It is considered <\/span><b>one of the biggest lakes <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the <\/span><b>Brahmaputra Valley of Lower Assam.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is surrounded by steep highlands on the northern and southern sides, and its <\/span><b>main sources of water<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are the <\/span><b>Kalmani and Basistha Rivers.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the <\/span><b>only major stormwater storage basin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the city of <\/span><b>Guwahati<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The l<\/span><b>ake\u2019s outflow<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the <\/span><b>Khandajan rivulet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which <\/span><b>joins the Brahmaputra.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was recognised as a<\/span><b> Ramsar Site <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 2002 and as an <\/span><b>Important Bird and Biodiversity Area<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IBA) in 2004. It is the <\/span><b>only Ramsar site in<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the state of <\/span><b>Assam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This lake is a<\/span><b> staging site on migratory flyway<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s, and some of the largest concentrations of aquatic birds in Assam can be seen, especially in winter.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some <\/span><b>globally threatened birds<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are supported, including <\/span><b>Spot-billed Pelican, Lesser Greater Adjutant Stork, and Baer\u2019s Pochard.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 50 fish species and aquatic resources provide livelihood support to about 1,200 households residing in about <\/span><b>12 villages on the fringes of the wetland.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Rani and Garbhanga hills<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><b>habitat of the Asiatic elephants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the southern side of the beel, are part of this ecosystem.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sentinelassam.com\/amp\/story\/north-east-india-news\/assam-news\/illegal-earth-cutting-from-deepor-beel-linked-wetland-continues-despite-court-orders-and-prohibitory-notices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">SENT<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Deepor Beel is a permanent freshwater lake located on the outskirts of Guwahati, Assam.
