{"id":46028,"date":"2025-05-01T13:09:21","date_gmt":"2025-05-01T07:39:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=46028"},"modified":"2025-05-14T14:33:16","modified_gmt":"2025-05-14T09:03:16","slug":"national-human-rights-commission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/national-human-rights-commission\/","title":{"rendered":"National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Latest News<\/h2>\n<p>The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report regarding the abduction, rape, and murder of a minor girl in Hubballi, Karnataka, followed by the death of the accused in a police encounter.<\/p>\n<h2>About the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>NHRC is a statutory body<\/strong>, constituted under the\u00a0<strong>Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It was\u00a0<strong>established on 12th October 1993<\/strong>\u00a0as an\u00a0<strong>independent institution<\/strong>\u00a0to protect and promote\u00a0<strong>human rights<\/strong>, defined under\u00a0<strong>Section 2(1)(d)<\/strong>\u00a0of the Act.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Mandate and Objectives<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The NHRC safeguards rights related to\u00a0<strong>life, liberty, equality<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>human dignity<\/strong>, guaranteed by the\u00a0<strong>Constitution of India<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>international human rights treaties<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Its primary objectives include:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Strengthening institutional frameworks<\/strong>\u00a0to address human rights issues.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Independent investigation<\/strong>\u00a0of alleged human rights violations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Supporting and enhancing<\/strong>\u00a0the work of other institutions in promoting human rights.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Composition and Structure<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The NHRC consists of a\u00a0<strong>Chairperson<\/strong>\u00a0and up to\u00a0<strong>five members<\/strong>, including:\n<ul>\n<li>A\u00a0<strong>retired Chief Justice of India<\/strong>\u00a0(as Chairperson).<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0<strong>retired or sitting Supreme Court judge<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0<strong>retired or sitting Chief Justice of a High Court<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Three experts<\/strong>\u00a0in human rights, with\u00a0<strong>at least one woman<\/strong>\u00a0among them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Additionally,\u00a0<strong>seven ex-officio members<\/strong>\u00a0include the Chairpersons of:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>National Commissions for SCs, STs, Minorities, Women, BCs, Child Rights<\/strong>, and the\u00a0<strong>Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Appointment and Tenure<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Members are\u00a0<strong>appointed by the President of India<\/strong>\u00a0based on the recommendation of a\u00a0<strong>six-member committee<\/strong>\u00a0led by the\u00a0<strong>Prime Minister<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Tenure:\u00a0<strong>Three years<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>until the age of 70<\/strong>, whichever is earlier.
