


{"id":46124,"date":"2025-04-25T18:16:37","date_gmt":"2025-04-25T12:46:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=46124"},"modified":"2025-05-28T15:32:44","modified_gmt":"2025-05-28T10:02:44","slug":"chlorpyrifos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/chlorpyrifos\/","title":{"rendered":"Chlorpyrifos"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Chlorpyrifos Latest News<\/h2>\n<p>The 2025 COPs (Conferences of the Parties) of the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions are being held in Geneva (April 28\u2013May 9) to address hazardous chemicals like chlorpyrifos.<\/p>\n<h2>About Chlorpyrifos<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Chlorpyrifos<\/strong>, a pesticide classified as\u00a0<strong>\u2018moderately hazardous\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0by the\u00a0<strong>World Health Organisation<\/strong>, is still approved for use in India on\u00a0<strong>18 crops<\/strong>, despite bans in\u00a0<strong>over 40 countries<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0<strong>linked to neurotoxicity, reproductive toxicity, irreversible brain damage in unborn children<\/strong>, and the\u00a0<strong>ability to contaminate distant ecosystems<\/strong>\u00a0due to its mobility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Global and National Advocacy<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pesticide Action Network (PAN) India<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>It advocates placing\u00a0<strong>chlorpyrifos under Annex III of the Rotterdam Convention<\/strong>, requiring\u00a0<strong>prior informed consent<\/strong>\u00a0before trade.<\/li>\n<li>It calls for its inclusion under\u00a0<strong>Annex A of the Stockholm Convention<\/strong>, which demands a\u00a0<strong>complete global ban<\/strong>, though exemptions are usually allowed.<\/li>\n<li>It stresses that\u00a0<strong>safer alternatives are already available<\/strong>, making a\u00a0<strong>total ban both feasible and necessary<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unauthorised Use in India<\/strong>: A\u00a0<strong>2022 report<\/strong>\u00a0found the\u00a0<strong>illegal use of chlorpyrifos and other agrochemicals like paraquat<\/strong>, raising serious\u00a0<strong>regulatory and enforcement concerns<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What is CIBRC?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>Central Insecticides Board &amp; Registration Committee (CIBRC)<\/strong>\u00a0operates under the\u00a0<strong>Directorate of Plant Protection, Quarantine &amp; Storage<\/strong>, part of the\u00a0<strong>Department of Agriculture &amp; Farmers Welfare<\/strong>, Ministry of Agriculture &amp; Farmers Welfare.<\/li>\n<li>It was\u00a0<strong>established in 1970<\/strong>\u00a0to ensure the\u00a0<strong>safe regulation of insecticides<\/strong>\u00a0across India, particularly focusing on minimising risks to\u00a0<strong>human health, animal safety<\/strong>, and the\u00a0<strong>environment<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Legal backing:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>Insecticides Act, 1968<\/strong>\u00a0forms the\u00a0<strong>statutory basis<\/strong>\u00a0for CIBRC.
