Makalu \u2014 the world\u2019s fifth highest peak, the China-border guarding force said recently.<\/p>\n<h2>About Mt. Makalu<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the\u00a0<strong>fifth highest mountain<\/strong>\u00a0in the world, standing at\u00a0<strong>8,485 meters<\/strong>\u00a0(27,838 ft) above sea level.<\/li>\n<li>It is located in the\u00a0<strong>Mahalangur range of the Nepal Himalayas<\/strong>\u00a0on the\u00a0<strong>border between Nepal and Tibet.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It lies 14 miles (23 km)\u00a0<strong>southeast of Mount Everest.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The mountain lies in the<strong>\u00a0Makalu Barun National Park<\/strong>\u00a0and is known for its perfect\u00a0<strong>pyramid shape with four sharp ridges.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Makalu I and Makalu II<\/strong>\u00a0are the two notable\u00a0<strong>subsidiary peaks<\/strong>\u00a0of Makalu lying 3 km north-northwest of the main summit.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>At the base<\/strong>\u00a0of Mt. Makalu, there lies a natural wonder:<strong>\u00a0the Barun Valley.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>This valley facilitates stunning\u00a0<strong>elevated waterfalls falling inside\u00a0<\/strong>the\u00a0<strong>deep gorges,diverse species of flora and fauna<\/strong>\u00a0with rich cultures of\u00a0<strong>ethnic communities<\/strong>\u00a0like\u00a0<strong>Sherpa and Kirat.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Makalu is one of the\u00a0<strong>harder eight-thousanders<\/strong>\u00a0and is considered one of the\u00a0<strong>most difficult mountains in the world to climb.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Makalu expeditions are difficult because the mountain is notorious for its\u00a0<strong>steep pitches and knife-edged ridges<\/strong>\u00a0that make the climbing Makalu very open to the elements.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>final ascent of the summit\u00a0<\/strong>pyramid\u00a0<strong>involves technical rock climbing.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Mt.
