{"id":46178,"date":"2026-02-13T12:11:26","date_gmt":"2026-02-13T06:41:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=46178"},"modified":"2026-02-13T14:50:58","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T09:20:58","slug":"bhakra-dam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/bhakra-dam\/","title":{"rendered":"Bhakra Dam"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Bhakra Dam Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amid rising incidents of landslides during the monsoon season, a comprehensive geological study of the hillocks surrounding the Bhakra Dam is likely to be undertaken by the Geological Survey of India (GSI). <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Bhakra Dam<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a<\/span><b> concrete gravity dam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across the <\/span><b>Sutlej River.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is located at a gorge near the upstream Bhakra village in the Bilaspur district of <\/span><b>Himachal Pradesh.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is near the <\/span><b>border between Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the <\/span><b>highest straight gravity dam in the world<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with a height of about 207.26 meters.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>Asia\u2019s second tallest dam, next to<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the 261 m <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/tehri-lake\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tehri Dam<\/a>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also in India.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>History<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bhakra Dam is <\/span><b>one of the earliest river valley development schemes <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">undertaken by India <\/span><b>after independence.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>construction <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of this dam<\/span><b> started in 1948<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first prime minister of India, poured the first bucket of concrete into the foundations of Bhakra.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dam was <\/span><b>completed <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by the end of <\/span><b>1963<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bhakra Dam was <\/span><b>described as the \u2018New Temple of Resurgent India\u2019 by Jawaharlal Nehru.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Operation <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and maintenance of the Bhakra dam is done by the <\/span><b>Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB).<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dam created the <\/span><b>massive Gobind Sagar reservoir <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and plays a crucial role in <\/span><b>irrigation, flood control,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and hydroelectric power generation for <\/span><b>Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Chandigarh.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 90 km long reservoir is spread over an area of 168.35 sq.km.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>In terms of storage of water<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it is the <\/span><b>second largest reservoir in India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><b>first being Indira Sagar Dam in Madhya Pradesh <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with a capacity of 12.22 billion cu m.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Nangal Dam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><b>another dam downstream<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Bhakra Dam.
