Technology has provided the first direct evidence of turbidity currents transporting microplastics into the deep sea through submarine canyons, even in areas not fed by rivers (e.g., Whittard Canyon off Ireland).<\/p>\n<h2>What are Turbidity Currents?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Turbidity currents<\/strong>\u00a0are\u00a0<strong>rapid, downslope flows<\/strong>\u00a0of water heavily laden with\u00a0<strong>sediments<\/strong>, increasing the water\u2019s\u00a0<strong>density<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>They function similarly to\u00a0<strong>underwater avalanches<\/strong>, triggered by:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Earthquakes<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Submarine landslides<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Slope failures<\/strong>\u00a0and other\u00a0<strong>geological disturbances<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Key Features of Turbidity Currents<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>As turbidity increases, water becomes\u00a0<strong>denser and less transparent<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>These flows\u00a0<strong>erode the seafloor<\/strong>, forming and enlarging\u00a0<strong>submarine canyons<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>They deposit\u00a0<strong>sediment in graded layers<\/strong>, with\u00a0<strong>coarser particles settling first<\/strong>\u00a0and finer ones later.<\/li>\n<li>Aid in\u00a0<strong>deep-sea sedimentation<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>shaping oceanic topography<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Submarine Canyons<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Submarine canyons<\/strong>\u00a0are\u00a0<strong>narrow, steep-sided underwater valleys<\/strong>\u00a0found on\u00a0<strong>continental slopes and rises<\/strong>, often extending from the\u00a0<strong>continental shelf<\/strong>\u00a0into the\u00a0<strong>deep ocean<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>They are carved out mainly by\u00a0<strong>erosional forces<\/strong>\u00a0like\u00a0<strong>turbidity currents<\/strong>, similar to how river canyons are formed on land.<\/li>\n<li>Globally, there are about\u00a0<strong>9,477 known submarine canyons<\/strong>, covering nearly\u00a0<strong>11% of continental slope areas<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Canyons on active margins<\/strong>\u00a0(tectonically active zones) tend to be\u00a0<strong>steeper and shorter<\/strong>, while those on\u00a0<strong>passive margins<\/strong>\u00a0are more gradual.<\/li>\n<li>Their walls can be\u00a0<strong>nearly vertical<\/strong>\u00a0and are prone to\u00a0<strong>collapse<\/strong>, adding sediment to turbidity flows.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Types of Submarine Canyons<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bank<\/strong>: A\u00a0<strong>flat-topped elevation<\/strong>\u00a0on continental margins, formed by\u00a0<strong>erosional and depositional processes<\/strong>, e.g.,\u00a0<strong>Dogger Bank<\/strong>\u00a0in the\u00a0<strong>North Sea<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shoal<\/strong>: A\u00a0<strong>shallow area<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a0<strong>sediment accumulation<\/strong>, often\u00a0<strong>hazardous to navigation<\/strong>, and generally found at depths\u00a0<strong>&lt;10 meters<\/strong>\u00a0at low tide.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reef<\/strong>: Built from\u00a0<strong>calcareous skeletons<\/strong>\u00a0of corals and algae;
